He had a handful of whiffs last week, too

I won't get into a debate considering LSU put 65 on the score board.
And, the lone sack I recall came from the left side.

quote:I'd say he has drastically improved but is playing "well" and "very well at time"... I wouldn't say "damned well", at least not consistently.
I do agree his skill set is best suited at OG, but the whiffs have drastically improved from last year. You need to try and forget last year and focus on the now. Austin has played damned well in 2019.
And MrWiseGuy is right, he still has a few whiffs, they are indeed happening. However, and this is part of that improvement...
A) when he 'looses face', i.e. isn't squared up enough with the right distance (shortest possible) to fend off a variety of moves, and the rusher continues to the outside, upfield, he handles it much much better. He's learned to to use Plan B to keep the rusher going upfield without BOTH letting them re-engage and turn the corner AND get him over-committed to make up space and make a move inside.
B) Preventing that move inside. HUGE improvement there. He's learned how to do A, fairly well, without letting the rusher getting a shorter/quicker AB line to QB.
Worth noting these are some of the mistakes I've seen Dare (and Hines) make. It's experience for the most part. The idea of getting the 'best' block causes balance and leverage problems and a defender can cause you to overcommit and use that against you.

I agree, I was hard on Deculus last year and he is greatly improved. He is still not totally there yet but he's a lot better. Probably best suited for guard because of his strength in the run game and not elite foot quickness but he's the best option at RT right now. Cameron wire has the body type but has a ways to go, along with Dare and Traore at LT, to be ready to handle SEC DE's.

The question we should be asking is whether Dare is better than Deculus. If either he or Charles can play the right side, that is what I would like to see. Then we have Hines or potentially Deculus able to play LG. I've never played OL, so I'm sure I am over simplifying the intricacies of switching from T to G and left to right, but I hope that if Dare continues to come, we can shift some things around to get our best 5 on the field.

Forgive me if I don't jump aboard the Austin Deculus fan club.
I just don't see this guy being good enough to handle Florida's ends or Bama's Terrell Lewis
Maybe I'm wrong

Top play was dead before they hiked the ball, defensive numbers to run side. Dare got stoned (slow out of his stance and no explosion), Magee tripped over his own feet and Lewis and Deculus didn't get down the line. Only 2 that did a good job was Cush and the TE. Bottom 2, that is my biggest beef with Deculus, he has missed assignments. I agree with I20goon, he was horrible last year with DE rushing outside then spinning or changing directions inside ( he has gotten better at it). I thought he played well against Texas. The reality of it is, he's the best option at RT right now. Dare isn't ready for the SEC and Deculus will have his moments (bad ones) but he's the best at RT right now. Dare has the prototype body for LT but I think he's a year away.
