Gator Flop in 1971 against Miami

ESPN

quote:

The Gator Flop.

In case you don't know the story, here's the short version: Miami and Florida were both having miserable seasons when they squared off at the Orange Bowl for the final game of the 1971 season. But the game still had plenty of juice -- in part because of the schools' longtime rivalry and in part because Florida quarterback John Reaves needed 343 passing yards to break Jim Plunkett's NCAA career passing record of 7,544 yards.

With time winding down and Florida winning by a lopsided score of 45-8, Reaves was still 10 yards shy of the record. Miami had the ball and was slowly driving for a meaningless touchdown -- too slowly for Florida's taste. Fearing that time might expire before Reaves could get the ball back, the Florida defense repeatedly called timeout. But Miami kept creeping down the field.

That's when the Florida defense played its trump card: As Miami snapped the ball from the Florida 8-yard line, the Gators players fell down on the job -- literally. They simply flopped to the ground, giving Miami quarterback John Hornibrook an uncontested touchdown.

Thanks CFP.

there has never been a rematch from regular season in the playoffs.

can someone refresh my memory as to if any team ever got in over a (actually deserving) team that the lost to in regular season?

That's a dumb question. LSU is not a lock. Win all the games. Who would be dumb enough to lose and chance this bias Playoff Committee put Utah or Oregon in instead of LSU. They really in truth rather those two schools over LSU. Think about this. If Auburn beat us Georgia and Georgia beats LSU game over for the Tigers. If Oregon beats Utah in PAC 12 title game they WILL replace LSU with them guaranteed. Ohio State, Clemson, Baylor if they win out (undefeated) if they beat Oklahoma twice at 13-0. So,although LSU has played a great schedule those are the possibilities. FACT!!!! And yes, Baylor (power 5 conference undefeated Big 12 champion would trump a 1 lose brilliant LSU season. So LSU can't afford to lose.

I personally care more about winning SEC championships than mythical national championships.

Conference championship games are worthless, unless a 1 loss Pac 12 or Big 12 champion gets in over bama. Just because you think that 1 team is better than another, at some point winning and losing games has to count for something.

You obviously know nothing about sports. LSU has to play as though they can lose a playoff chase. You see how the lat to teams have been losing lately. Teams were favored to beat underdogs by as much as 40 points and lost. They lost. The most important game of the season is always the next game. Cherish the fact you won the last game, but prepare harder for the next. Remember this phrase. " Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail. Doubt is not the ENEMY of winning. Overconfidence in an of itself is the enemy. Overconfidence is the way you give your opponent an inch to victory at a time."
You don't think Ole Miss (a rilvary) want be prepared to go all out knowing LSU will be overconfident. Believe it. Penn State was overconfident against Minnesota. The later said they were and got shocked. So was Oklahoma and Georgia.
LSU play your best game as it is your last. Car or Diem.!!!
