re: Hiring Brian Kelly

No one knew that at the time. Even if it was just Notre Dame he always won and he had rescued Notre Dame from much suckage. He was articulate and was considered a “big” get. It really pissed off the media and establishment because he jilted the Domers. (See a pattern here?)
No one could have predicted he would be lazy; make horrible coaching hires; and, in general, mail it in. He had no overriding offensive or defensive philosophy or scheme. He was in short, a fraud.
His hire was not Woodward’s decision alone. You can bet the big money guys and BOS were onboard with the deal.
Following O, he just exacerbated a bad situation and left us in the same shape as he inherited. In the end he damaged the LSU “brand”.

Yep, just like the Lane Train. This board is comical. Half the people don't even realize you could have hired Lane Kiffin for a Big Mac combo 6 years ago. But, its what make the board fun to read.

Considering who LSU either didn’t pursue or couldn’t land, the hire wasn’t a terrible one - at the time. That said, I’ve always viewed Brian Kelly as a difficult personality, not a particularly likable guy.
Ultimately, he was a bad fit, and his coaching drive appeared to be gone. More often than not, he came across as red-faced and barking at people rather than leading them.

Most wanted to believe what Kelly said, that he couldn't get the players he needed to get over the hump and he thought LSU was the place to do that. His track record building ND back into a perennial contender was enough to ignore his Big Game Brian reputation. I think a 40 year old Brian Kelly would have been successful at LSU. I think he hung it up after 2023.
Eh-not exactly.
I think most fans said "Hmmm, ok I wasn't expecting that but he has done well in the past. I guess I'll give him a chance."

Playing devils advocate. If he was never stupid enough to force Denbrock out in exchange for Sloan - he’d still be coaching and we’d have been like 10-3.

You guys forget the shite show that was happening before he left. Much like today but a LOT worse.
Here’s a reminder
There wasn’t the NIL or transfer portal that is is today
He left a ND team that ended up 5th (he coached them to) in a 4 team playoff
He built ND into a contended from pure shite.
He went to the CFP and BCS - the only coach not named Saban to do that at the time.
He was a rebuilder of programs.
There was a Title IX and NCAA sanctions
Looming over and some did hit. Vandal Alexander case, Verge created nightmare and such.
Then there was the Verge scheduled with FSU - who at that time was an excellent team.
Yes - It was a good hire to get some
Organization back from the shite show it
WS.

The only way Brian Kelly would have worked out at LSU is if he would have brought their schedule with him!

Those of us who were vocal about this being the worst possible hire starting on day 1 were crucified on this board. I was called every name in the book yet I stood on my opinion as though my life depended on it.

Yes! Hiring the winningest active coach in a sport is always a bad idea. And spare me the “he wasn’t one of us” bullshite. Neither was Saban. You clowns act like someone intentionally hired someone to fail at their job.

I actually said on day 1 he was not the right choice. It seemed obvious to me. I hoped I was wrong.
I'm glad he's gone!

With blake baker, it would have been a national championship, giving him time past 25. Could spin it other ways to.

How far down was Kelly on Woody’s list? I am sure Kelly was not the first choice.

I’ll admit, I thought it was a great hire at the time and still believed it two years into his tenure. The coordinator issues he had here were his biggest undoing. Seems like he just didn’t want to put in the necessary time and effort the last 18 months as the head of this program. Guaranteed money will take away most people’s hunger.

2 best moments in the BK era:
Jayden, Malik and BTjr which lead to Jaydens heisman
OT win vs Bama at home
Everything else was pretty much forgettable

The writing was always on the wall about BK. That dude had no business even being considered for the job let alone being offered it. He's a loser with an inflated resume. Why do you think ND was happy to see him go?

What does that even mean? “On paper it was a good hire”. On paper? No. It was a horrible hire. Paper or no paper.
You know what it means unless you’re super dense.
He had a great record with a ton of wins, and he had been a winner everywhere he had been. He had never been fired from a job before as a coach. In other words, he was a good hire on paper.

That makes you super duper special, unlike all the pundits and sports writers who all thought BK was a good hire based on his decades of success. And I bet right after the Bama win you were on here saying what a bad hire he was? When he won the SEC West his first year after inheriting a depleted roster, I bet your post history is full of prophetic statements about how BK is no good despite all indications otherwise? You are a prophet.
