3 in 10 years, and his first has to be in under 4 years. And for those who thinks that's extreme, Saban has 6 in 15 years just at Bama. For the 2nd or 3rd highest paid coach, these aren't lofty expectations.

He can go circle k and pick up 15 or 30 pack today

However, Saban won a NC in year 4; Miles in year 3 (played for another in year 7); Orgeron in year 3 (maybe 3.5 if you want to consider his interim season). Thus, those expectations may not be all that absurd and is a reason LSU is one of the best jobs in all of college football. Name another school over the last 30+ years that has had three different HC's win a National Championship period...let alone within 4 years of taking the job.
This is my main reason for having those expectations. absolute idiots won two nattys here. Kelly also has a lot of talent on his roster already and at the four year mark should be stacked with his own recruits. If he hasn't won one by year 5 I think he's at least knocked on the door.

Les Miles had a good string of 10 win seasons and it wasn’t good enough.

That's because everyone knows what could have been.

Wait a minute... where are all the "We love O cos he tawwwks like us" morons? A truly respectable coach (less the watch tower incident) and our fan base is happy?? Wow.

The general notion is that if you haven't won a NC within your first 3-4 years, you won't at all.
Dabo is the major exception here.
I think Mack Brown is the only other one in the modern era.
(ETA Kelly's closest year was his 3rd year making the BCSNCG)

But they were coaching and recruiting in a different universe than the one that exists now with NIL. A&M is (and UTw will be in) our league with the best talent money can buy. If NIL doesn't get regulated, or we don't match it Kelly's hands will be tied.

If coach O can do it in 3, then Kelly can do it in less.
But honestly, it's almost like it "happened" for EO in 1 year. It's not like he was building up anything in the previous years. He just got lucky and all the stars aligned in that 1 year... 1 astronomically, fantastic year. O was just along for the ride and got WAY too much credit.

I don't see lsu winning any titles unless nil dissapears. We can't buy recruits like alot of the big programs can

My thing is, NIL will be regulated. It has to be. The chaos that’s going on right now can’t last.

Agreed. But don't think for a second blue-chip players weren't being paid significantly BEFORE NIL. I guess the question is how many, and how much more are they being paid now that such payment is "legal". And I still expect LSU to be competitive in the NIL market. Maybe not on the level of A&M, Texas, and (possibly) USC. But enough to still get talent. At that point it is still going to come down to coaching.
The ONLY reason Ed Orgeron won a NC in 2019 with all that talent is because he was largely uninvolved in the actual on-field approach. Aranda and Brady had almost full control of that aspect. Once both were gone and Ed decided he wanted to dictate the on-field approach (i.e. his tremendous attacking 4-3 defense) the program went to shite.
Are A&M, Alabama, Ohio St, Georgia, going to have big time talent? Sure. But Kelly has competed with those guys for the most part without the number of blue chip prospect he will have access to at LSU. The (unspoken) hope for him is that the LSU talent he could never get enrolled at ND will be enough to clear the final hurdle for him to win a NC.

Nick Saban said to a coaches clinic that the key to his success isn't what he puts on a grease board, because at his level everyone knows how to scheme the same. His key is simply having better players than the opponents. I nearly works every time.

depends on how serious LSU gets with NIL

Folks here don't understand that if he wins one by 2030 how incredible that would be...it is HARD to win one. Go back to 1999 and ask yourself, what would you say if in 30 years you had four national titles, five title appearances and 7-8 SEC titles...
