For the most part, the first game of each season establishes "your" tailgating spot according to etiquette. The Longtimers will get there very early on Friday, or even Thursday, before the first game and set up camp in their traditional spot. Other long time tailgaters around them will know where everyone has traditionally set up shop and will let you know. A lot of Longtimers around me will actually hang out Friday night for awhile and will be glad to talk to you and share who's who and where their traditional tailgates are and where some good spots for you would be.
Some old timers will take matters into their own hands if you take their spot, but most will work with you if you're a nice guy and willing to move a little. What will most likely happen if you take the wrong spot is that your stuff won't be there when you come back.
I would suggest what the other poster said...and that's to scout out where you want to be during the first game. Talk to some of the other camps around that area and see if you like them. But if it's not taken the first game, then it's considered open and fair game for you to set up.
Just remember, you are amongst fellow Tiger fans and should be able to get along with your neighbors and have fun. You are the new tailgate on campus, so be respectful of all the tailgaters that have been doing it for many years before you and you'll be fine.

The old Mudgate spot. Claim a couple picnic tables and setup a tent Friday night

Ok so how would I claim a spot Friday evening, leave it over night and come back Saturday morning? What should I set up to save a spot? Would anyone move my shite?
Leave your canopy skeleton up Friday (or Thursday) night. If it's a spot where someone has literally been for years they'll probably move your stuff. But chances are they'll be out there before you anyways.

The Cajuns & Coonasses have unwritten rules. Infringe on someone's "spot" & prepare for a knuckle check trial by combat.

You can show up at 3pm in game day and get that spot.

Just find you a spot and setup. The people that’s been in the same spot for years know how to get that spot and that’s by setting up Friday night or before sunrise on Saturday. Usually the part timers are setting up after 8am.

That spot can hold several groups. Lots of shade and picnic tables and port o potty 50 feet away

Just show up early. Believe me, those with routine spots will be there before you. With that said, if you are unfamiliar with the environment, just ask someone else who is setting up.

All true, but what was once a hard spot to get to now is impossible.

So what time today should be fair game to claim a spot to make sure we don’t set up in a long-timers spot?
