IMHO you are missing the big picture in taking this line of thinking on the state of our program.
For me it's pretty simple, we underachieved and quit with a team with talent, and we've underachieved with a team with less talent. For me it's just that simple. And it starts at the top.

an NCAA championship as a freshman.
Simmons was a distraction.
Johnny would have failed on his own but Simmons didn't put off the inevitable. He accelerated it.
Im showing a player being effective in the half court without being good shooter.

a player is more effective in the low post than on the perimeter where should he be playing?
Then why didnt you say this?
Instead you said he was ineffective because he didn't have a jumper.
I dont think anyone wouldve had a problem with that.
Simmons was easily our best passer and ball handler. Even in sec play he led the sec in fta per game.

So what?

You're stretching. Last year, we also had Quarterman (an NBA player), and Hornsby and Victor too, both very solid players. So it wasn't just Ben, we had 3 other really good players.
And I, for one, still do question Simmons' greatness.

frick Ben Simmons.
Youre the same kind of poster that gets upset when we dont sign great players. Ben simmons had one of the best freshman seasons in ncaa history and you say frick ben simmons. Ben simmons has done more for lsu basketball than you or anyone youre related to ever will.

We lost the entire starting five from last year's squad. Excluding Blakeney. Yes, Jones sucks, however if anyone thought this team would be close to competitive doesn't know basketball really well.

Simmons was the worst thing to happen to LSU. He cared nothing about the university and it was all about himself. He's going to flop in the NBA, just give it time. He's not a leader on the court and to be an elite player you have to be able to take over a game and he doesn't have the skills to do that. He was a great HS player and a decent college player, but the NBA is where the big boys roam and they're going to give him a serious dose of reality. He'll be a journeyman, just watch!

He still has not scored a point in the NBA.

and I know he is injured
So you just decided to make an idiotic statement for the hell of it

what did he do for LSU? Take us to the tourney? Win a conference championship? Brought great publicity to our program? Build a foundation so great recruits follow him and LSU trends upward?
Last year was a debacle, and this year is a complete cluster.
So what exactly did Ben do for us, Rick?

He gave sweat and time. He couldve gone anywhere in the country.

Blame coaching not a player that had one of the best freshman seasons in ncaa history.

Chose to come to lsu. Gave sweat and time for lsu basketball. Thats more than 99% of the people on this board.
Its telling that you have a problem with someone saying a lsu player gave more to lsu basketball than posters on an anonymous message board.

So did every walk-on. Sweat and time isn't the standard that the top recruit in the nation is judged by.

Drivel. I never implied that posters gave more to LSU basketball.

Seriously, JJ's idea of offence was 5 out and let the player's go 1 on 1. Maybe if the Tigers had a coach that had a clue about basketball then maybe Simmons' skill set could have been utilised better to make the team even better. Running plays to get the ball into the right spots to attack the defence. frick me, I can't remember any screens being set off the ball ever in the last three seasons. Simmons did his best to drag this sorry arse team up the standings despite the coach. However, you could literally see his frustration grow at the coach and TQ til the point he must have said 'frick you, do it yourself and see if I give a shite'.
I can't recall which game it was but remember he got 2 quick fouls early and JJ left him on the bench for the remainder of the half - almost as if he's completely forgotten that he had the best player in all of college sitting on his bench while the team fell apart on the court in front of him

Yea. My favorite was when we declined the NIT cause your boy didn't want to play anymore ... frick that dude

Let's just be honest. Johnny Jones sucks. I was pulling for the guy, but I think people underestimate how good Martin & Mickey were. And they had a pretty good supporting cast. This was JJ third year. This is what JJ has done while at LSU.
Yr 1: 19-12 tied for 8th in SEC no post season.
Yr 2: 20-14 tied for 6th in SEC. NIT 2nd Round.
Yr 3: 22-11 tied for 3rd in SEC NCAA 2nd Round (the playin games are considered 1st round, we made the tournament and lost first game).
Yr 4: 19-14 tied for 3rd in SEC. Turned down invite to NIT. Had the best freshman in the country on team.
Yr 5: currently 9-9. Our defense is awful, we can't rebound. There will be no post season unless we somehow find a way to win the SEC tournament.. But let's be realistic.
His 3rd and 4th year proved his is a poor man's Dale Brown. Had talent and underperformed.

No, it's not. At all. It's stating facts.
The team this year is terribly coached. They've been terribly coached from the moment Jones stepped on campus, but that guy's statement was completely false.
