I remember one year LSU was playing mid-week game at Zephyr (maybe Wally Pontiff classic) and late in game Ben McDonald came to pitch relief. I was quite surprised because he was theirs starting ace in weekend games. Not sure who LSU coach was then but I didn’t like that decision. McDonald was really over worked and hurt his career.

The way the schedule lines up through the weekend they will have plenty opportunity to see all the guys they want to. I think with 4 games this weekend you will see Hellmers (assuming he starts) go into the game 4 or 5 innings tomorrow. Also with the competition for the weekend being weaker than the competition tomorrow, you can go ahead and play this weekday game a little differently.

I'm interpreting this as "the next game is always the most important game of the season"

That’s because you are conveniently leaving out this part of his quote:

“the focus doesn’t drop, the rpi doesn’t know the difference between midweek and not - JJ”

RPI matters, therefore midweek games matter. That should have always been obvious though

In 2001 Skip started Mestepey on Wednesday against Tulane after Mestepey threw 119 pitches on Friday night. Tulane had already beaten LSU in March and Skip didn't want to lose to Tulane twice in his final season. LSU ended up losing that second game with Tulane and then lost in the Supers to Tulane anyways.

Mestepey threw 119 pitches on Friday, 100 on Wednesday, and 113 on the next Sunday.

In the 2001 Regional Mestepey started on Friday and then again on Sunday evening. No wonder his arm fell off. Smoke didn't treat him any better in 2002.

The thing is LSU was really good in midweek games under Paul when he cared. LSU went about two full seasons without losing a midweek game during that 2013-era. Once Paul checked out and stopped caring was when LSU really started being awful in midweek games. There's no doubt Paul's lack of focus and mental sharpness at the end of his career bled into the team's performance on the field.

Weren't they damn near undefeated in the mid week last season? Like a loss or two?

Zephyr was built almost 10 years after McDonald left LSU.

I didn't think I could like Coach J more than I already did, but this just adds to it.

Yeah, we were 12-1 in midweek games last year. We lost the last one we played.

And a major reason why LSU made the tournament.

Midweek games "don't matter" if you're 20-10 in the SEC

Midweek games absolutely matter if you're a middle of the road team fighting for the postseason. That's the point I'd make in all the midweek bitchfest threads we'd have.

I don't think many have ever disagreed with that. Of course those games are more important if you have a losing SEC record.

Midweek game losses are also more acceptable if there are signs that something is being worked on or something is being done for development purposes. Sleepwalking through them and taking Ls from Southland also-rans still matters, but not for good reasons.

Ill add, if completely ignoring development, they matter less playing teams like la tech, because a loss wont kill your rpi. Losing to grambling would. Those types of midweek games are more important to win to me.

Jay can say its the most important game, and its true because its the next game and thats his mentality. But we know its really not. Otherwise Money or Hilliard or Fontenot would be starting.

The "midweek games don't matter crowd" hold the belief midweek games don't matter under any circumstances.

Not everyone. The point has always been that if you have a good SEC record, a midweek loss isn't going to hurt your seeding.
