Stevenson is batting 100 points lower
Laird has also had more than twice the plate appearances so it isn't exactly comparing apples to apples. Laird has been better, but it isn't as significant as the numbers would suggest at face value. Both have been bad against the SEC.

But Laird started well and seems to be coming on as of late

It's more impressive as numbers typically go down the more at bats you have.

It seems like just yesterday fans were saying the same about a freshman named Nola playing shortstop.

Those of us who paid attention to Nola's at bats and knew baseball, knew he was going to be okay. He worked counts and got on base. These guys aren't working counts like that.

And if PM had him 9th, we might see a huge game later in the postseason, bottom of the ninth, 2 outs with Laird batting when it could have been someone else.
Surely you understand the concept that your 2 hole hitter is likely to get more at bats per game than the 9 hole hitter, right ?

Stevenson has had 89 official ABs. Do you know what Laird's average is over his last 89 ABs? Do you know what each is hitting against SEC pitching? Neither are going to be in the lineup for their offense, Laird just ran up some good numbers in non conference play. When it comes to where we are now and where we're going....Laird gives you a little more offense than Stevenson (but neither one is very good), and Stevenson gives you a little better defense in center (but both are good). Both are big defensive upgrades over anyone that would replace them.

How do you know that they are both huge upgrades over Mcmullen
Posted on 5/22/13 at 8:50 pm to josh336
I can only assume because playing McMullen in right would be the easiest way to fix the lineup. It would allow you to get Foster's bat in the lineup at DH without him costing anything on defense, and you would still have Laird or Stevenson to patrol center. The fact that he hasn't even been given a chance speaks volumes, imo.

I know it's been talked about before, but what about Foster in Left, Laird in center, McMullen in right & Rhymes DH once we start the regionals ?

You don't put your best hitter second.

I think it is safe to say there is no chance Foster and McMullen will play in the same outfield.
Posted on 5/22/13 at 9:05 pm to Broham
Bro, only reason I switched Bregman & Rhymes there is because I like Bregman's speed and base running better than Rhymes. Plus, an argument could be made that Katz is our best hitter. He and Bregman had the same exact batting average going into today.

We won't see either of them in the outfield again with the love fest Mainieri has for Stevenson.
Posted on 5/22/13 at 9:07 pm to doze4
Katz is no slouch but give me Bregman.

Is it safe to say, that behind Laird & Stevenson, Foster & McMullen are the next two fastest guys on the team ?
Posted on 5/22/13 at 9:11 pm to doze4
I'm not sure, I just know their not liabilities out there like most think.
Posted on 5/22/13 at 9:12 pm to Broham
Mainieri obviously thinks the offensive advantages a Laird-Foster/McMullen outfield would give you do not outweigh the defensive advantages of a Stevenson-Laird outfield.
Maybe it would be different if several of the other spots couldn't produce like they have, or if our pitching was weaker forcing us to play more slugfests.

Stevenson did hit the ball hard when he hit it off the pitcher, I hope we see more of that.
