Hawthorne just seems to hate his job at times. He has got increasingly more negative as he has gotten older. I call it Grumpy Old Man Syndrome.

If you went to as many LSU basketball as he has in the past 10 years, you'd probably be pretty damn cranky, too.

Jim's call on one of Randle's TDs last week..."He's at the 10, 15, 5 TOUCHDOWN"

Although I rarely listen to LSU games on the radio now, and as others have said, Hawthorn, like Ferguson, was that familiar voice over the static when trying to pick up the games on WWL while I worked offshore or lived in Texas. Brought me back home.

I know some of you can't stand the guy, but there's a lot worse out here in other parts of the country, believe me.

This.

I wish everyone who complains about him would listen to other teams radio guys to get some persective on how good he really is.

Not on radio but just watch Musberger on ABC and you will be amazed at how many mistakes he makes....and he is known to be one of the best.

You know LSU could conceivably open up the process to replace Hawthorne when he retires and hire someone from outside the LSU family

Just like they did when they hired Jim Hawthorne

This. Has worked with the last (2) head coaches.

I remember a time when John Ferguson was getting bad pub, much in the way JH is now. This was late 70's early 80's. But, like the previous post, he was a familiar voice at night when trying to pull in a radio signal when far from home on a Saturday night.

This nails it. People bitched about JF too. I liked JF, and like Hawthorne near as much.

As a kid, seeing LSU was so rare on tv that your whole vision of the team had those guy's imprint on it. Some of my best memories are listening to Ferguson/Hawthorne. I missed Ferguson when he left, and I'll miss Hawthorne just as much.

Sure he makes mistakes, but I want a guy calling our games that loves the school as much as me. And I think Hawthorne does.

I like his attitude. If LSU is playing like crap or making tons of mistakes I certainly don't want to hear someone being all cheerful about it.

For you people in love with Hawthorne, just count the times he has to go back and correct himself after he has wrongly anticipated what has just happened on the field.
Trying to follow what is happening on the field is like trying to work a verbal rubics cube.

I counted it vs au, it was like 132 times.

Im not a moron so I dont have problems listening, paying atteniton when he corrects himself and enjoying the call.

Maybe one day you'll gain that skill.

110%

some of you live in a bubble and have no clue how unbelievably droll and boring other universities' announcers are. Listen to shite like Texas Tech's or Nebraska or Arizona's play by play guys. Or worse, try on UT's Craig Way-bot3000. He sounds like Stephen Hawking 85% of the game.

Mistakes or not, at least Hawthorne can paint a picture with his words.....many, many, many of these other guys out there right now do very little more than spew stats for an entire game.

I'd love to hear Jim Henderson doing double-duty for LSU and the Saints.
I would second that! Gene Deckerhoff does pbp for both FSU and Tampa. So it is possible.

That just doesn't bother me. Like, not at all.

If this is true, the problem is not Hawthorne. You can't fix it either. Sorry.

I don't see that happening. Suppose LSU plays a 7:00 game on Saturday night and the Saints are at the Giants Sunday at noon. Kinda hard for the same guy to get to both places.

Not sure what arrangement FSU and Tampa have, but I don't see LSU getting into the same thing.
