Just watching the constant motion, smart play, ball movement, and strategy is great... then I remember what LSU is doing.. standing around in a half court set, no movement, sloppy passing, no penetration and then a last second three attempt.

So sad.

it all starts with johnny jones. he controls the culture of the team. the only two players that acted like they gave a crap were hornsby and blakeney.

there is a giant chasm between LSU basketball and the teams i've watched the past few days when it comes to coaching, hustle, fundamentals, defense, shooting... just not even on the same level as a lot of these mid major teams.

and that falls on the coach. 4 years in and this IS a johnny jones program. highly rated players who believe in their own recruiting rankings from high school.

I enjoyed seeing Kermit win, even though it busted my bracket. Just pisses me off to see the passion, when the lack of it was largely what doomed us this year.

Why couldn't we get Jacob Evans III from our own backyard (St.Michael)? Was watching this kid play last night, he went off for 26&9 and plays 10000x harder than anyone on LSU's whole team! Dammit Johnny!!

We were too busy signing Josh Gray, Patterson, Elbert and Epps. :sarcasm:

But we also had a scholarship available after signing those 4. Evans sure would have helped once Hornsby went down.

LSU wasn't getting BOTH Evans and Sampson. It was one or the other. They went all in for Sampson. Evans was more fundamentally sound than Sampson. Sampson is the better athlete. Jones philosophy seems to lean towards athletes instead of pure basketball players.

Whatever the recruiting philosophy, without consistent accountability, underachievement will continue.

You hit the nail on the head. Strategy, talent and on floor coaching are important, but if you don't demand and get effort, none of that really matters.

You do realize that SFA has won 2 games in the last three years in the tournament as a 14 seed. Plus, in the last three years, they have lost ONE conference game (that's dominating your competition).

Last night was not a fluke or WVA just playing bad, it was a more fundamentally sound, disciplined basketball team making WVA look inept.

But we also thought we were "so talented", and we may have

This past LSU was absolutely talented. Certainly their first 7 could play with any team in the country. The biggest indication of just how talented they were is they fact that they were able to win 11 SEC games with with the worst coach in the SEC who has no discernible structure on offense or defense. Watch the tournament. You see offenses that have movement and screening away from the ball. Defenses that communicate and understand fundamentally how to guard. I've said it a hundred times this year, LSU is a rudderless ship under Jones. They basically a highly talented rec team. We all should have seen this 6 months ago

This is LSU's open practice from October. Yes, I know it's a bit more laxed because it was for TV, but does the scrimmage portion really look any different from how they played for 6 months? (cut to 33:00 mark)

LINK

There's no culture of winning, toughness or accountability. It's just go out there play and try win. But alas, why should anyone really be that surprised with the way things are turning out? LSU hired a coach with no real accomplishments in his 12 head coaching career up to that point. Why did anyone expect that to change just because he became the HC at the ONLY power-conf. school that would consider him for the position?

It's time for a change. There is just simply no argument to the contrary

Basketball is an effort game.

Our team was super talented but they really just didn't care enough to try for 2 halves

It's a culture thing

Yes it is. LSU has achieved this culture; in the 30's, 50's, the Pistol days of the 60's and 70's and of course for roughly the first 2 decades of Daddy Dale. Brady managed to attain the culture temporarily and inconsistently, even carrying over to Trent winning an SEC crown with Brady's players. However, JJ has thus far been able to come close to that culture, though admittedly he's been the second best recruiter in the SEC during his tenure as head coach. It's pretty easy to think that Dale or Brady would have won a few more games even into the post-season with the Talent at Jones' disposal. On the flip side, he has beaten Kentucky twice and nearly 4 times in his 4 seasons, percentages that only Dale Brown ever achieved. If only Jones could motivate the way Dale did or at least make his players angry at their opposition the way Brady could, on occasion, achieve. Guess the jury's still out on Jones, a very likeable Louisiana native, but the clock, she is a'tickin'.

That's something you just can't really teach sometimes. Certain guys just have the hunger. I'm remembering stuff like 06 team and Tyrus sprinting down the court screaming THIS IS HOW WE EAT after a big block, for example.

You can't teach effort as a coach but you can inspire people to give you 100% all of the time

You can definitely instill effort. Its what makes Shaka Smart's teams so damn good.
