I not only was there, I was on the field. When Jones hit Hamilton for a TD before halftime the roar from the crowd was actually felt as a breeze, a rush of air.

I was there and it was shaking in tiger stadium . Parsigian NDs coach said he would never play another game there at night again as long as he was coach . The other thing that most don’t know is before that game ND had never played an SEC team other than vanderbilt . The only games south they also played were at North carolina and Miami . I personally researched this so I know it is true . After the game vs i got home in Metairie and called the ND dorms and gave them hell amen

I listened to this game live on AFN at 0200 Central European Time while stationed at Wiley Barracks, Neu Ulm, Germany. I was assigned to 1st Platoon, A Battery, 1/81 Field Artillery (Pershing).

My platoon leader was a Notre Dame grad and I had a s@@@ eating grin for the next month. 9 months later, I was in the Louisiana National Guard and a student at LSU.

That was my all-time favorite game in Tiger Stadium. The crowd was nuts two hours before the game started with all kinds of obscene chants from the student section. shite, we all knew the Tigers were gonna win this one even if the rest of the country didn’t.

Jones to Hamilton

Goal line stands

It was loud start to finish. No one left early

You really could smell the bourbon from the field

It was the only time I rushed the field after a big win. Hell, it might’ve been the first time the field got rushed.

At the time, it was one of the best days of my life!

I was age 11. Watched it on TV. No high definition. No remote. No replay. It was in color, however. Great night in LSU history. Great memories.

I was exactly 4 days old, so technically the first LSU game of my lifetime.

My father was at this game and said it was his favorite game ever. He was at LSU as a student for the 58 season. I sure miss me some Tommy Casanova!!

The rest of the story...Tiger Rugby kicked ND's arse the same afternoon in BR and then revenge for the 3-0 game. A glorious day to be a Tiger.

LSU QB Paul Lyons was supposed to be a groomsman in my wedding that day but I forgave him for skipping out. lol.

Just asked him to toss a TD pass for me and my bride. He obliged in the closing minutes by hitting Andy Hamilton on the play that Hamilton beautifully juked out the ND All-American CB.

We got neckid and went wild in our hotel room in New Orleans. Great day and night.

Awesome stuff, my Dad talked for years about Bert Jones to Andy Hamilton. Interesting how they painted ND in one end zone.

That’s why neighbor put a ‘Tigers Eat Irish Stew’ bumper sticker on my car when I was a freshman in 1986.

I love that rival fans have such great memories playing my beloved Notre Dame. Say what you will about Notre Dame but they are the university with the most fans worldwide....and its not even close. Even have their own tv channel(NBC) to televise their games. Even though we havent won a Natty in forever....teams get up for Notre Dame....attendance records are through the roof. Ask USC fans about Notre Dame and they would say they could go 1-11 in a season as long as their 1 win is against Notre Dame.....lmao

Now THAT, baws, is football! Andy Hamilton, Bert Jones, Tommy Casanova, Art Cantrelle, Jimmy Ledoux, Chris Dantin, Steve Lelakacs, etc... they were a class act. And Cholly Mac wasn't too bad a coach

Traditional at the time. The Golden Band from Tigerland also turned to the East sideline, formed the letters "ND" and played their fight song in pre-game, to welcome the visitors to Tiger Stadium before their beatdown. Other college bands did the same.

Everyone was anticipating the rematch after feeling that the refs favored ND with a phantom pass interference call late in the 1970 game to allow the field goal win 3-0.

Dame came to down 8-1-0 for their last game (after going 45 years with out a bowl and playing in 1969 they decided to sit out 1971.)

The fact that ND chose to go to a bowl in 69 deprived one of the best Tiger teams of all time of going to the Cotton Bowl. All of the other prestigious bowls had already made commitments, and the Tigers voted as a team to stay home rather than go to a smaller bowl. THAT, is when my hatred for ND started.

The 70 game was broadcast in the GYM Armory on campus, on a giant screen. It was like being at a game. There was cheering after good plays, and boos after bad calls by the refs. None louder than the phantom PI call that moved ND into fg range for the only score. Our defense, led by DT Ronnie Estay held ND all game. I was in my last semester at LSU. This deepened my hatred for ND.

But, the 71 game was a glorious release of emotion as the Tigers produced several goal line stands, while Bert and the boys, passed like I’d never seen before. I still hate ND, but I had been given a giant dose of Good Times.

14 year-old me was there. The whole game was absolutely fantastic. The crowd was loud as I’ve ever heard it and raucous as hell.

But the moment that I remember, was the most insane was when the teams were lined up for the opening kickoff and waiting to come back from a TV time out.

An LSU fan, likely a student, went over the wall at the 50 yard line with a large LSU flag and ran to the ball which was teed up and planted the LSU flag next to it and ran off the other side.

Every LSU fan absolutely lost their mind at that point.

It rivaled the timeout after the score of the Stanford USC game was announced at the 2007 Florida game.

15 and 10th grade at DLS N.O. then and did not attend but watched with the fam at home in awe; wow dont recall that from the TV view but know the crowd was surely nuts and sounded on the broadcast! I can relate to the (2007 UF game not 97) USC score noise being in that one and the 97! Great makeup for the previous year in South Bend as mentioned. A music perspective for those ELP fans played first time at NO Warehouse that night and I missed it to watch this game; would probly still make that choice!

Yes, you’re right. Sorry it was the 2007 game. I was at both. At least briefly because at the 97 game I got ejected from the game for flipping off whole sections of Florida fans.
