Pendergast should be the first call. But I think it will be O, which I don't mind.

Look, I love O as DL and recruiting coach. He's PERFECT for that role.
When it comes to implementing and executing a complicated defensive scheme in the SEC West, LSU needs to get a top of the line DC with tons of experience in the role.
Clancy Pendergast, Bob Shoop, etc.
We aren't the right platform to see whether or not Orgeron could be a good DC. We need someone we know ALREADY IS.

Hearing O might be coming with Steele if he indeed goes to AU.

Look I love Coach O as much as anyone but why in the world would people want to promote someone that has never been a DC before?

Everyone saying that coach O is in the roll he needs to be in needs to understand that coach O is going to have opportunities elsewhere to either be a DC or HC. I think we either make him DC or he is gone next year. To me, his recruiting is enough for me to say that we should make him DC even if there may be more proven DCs out there.

Is Greg Mattison available? He's pretty much been demoted since Harbaugh came in.

Everyone understands this as well. Tough titty. We were great recruiters before Orgeron and will be after. I want him to stay, but LSU is not the program to break in new coordinators to see IF THEY MIGHT be good.
Its just not.

We haven't had a dominant defense since we stopped getting top notch DL talent. coach O gets top notch Dline talent. Defense more so than offense is about having the athletes. I don't think O would be a bad DC at all, and I definitely don't want to lose him, especially to another SEC school where we have to recruit against him.

In 2014, with the worst offense in LSU history, we had the #1 overall defense in the country with Chavis.

My bad, pre-bowl game shenanigans. And we were #1 in the SEC.
And even post bowl-game we were 4th in scoring d and #3 in passing D...nationally.
This year we weren't top half of the conference in either.
ETA:
And my point still stands. We had a great defense under Chavis last year. There is really no disputing that.

I think we definitely took a huge step back with Steele, but Chavis, as good of a coach as he is, left us incredibly thin in the front 7. I understand people's hesitation about promoting O, but I don't think it would be a bad hire.
If we are being honest with ourselves, unless Miles wins the SEC in the next 2 years he is likely gone. Whoever comes in is going to bring in their own guys, so this hire, in the grand scheme of things, is not all that important. Continuing to recruit at a high level is very important.
