Billy Cannon was a freak athlete and if he came along in this generation, he'd be even more of a beast.

i believe he ran a 9.3 or 9.4 100 yard dash.
And he was the shot-putter on the track team. Set the SEC record at that also iirc.

these times are done with football gear, right?
they didn't record 40-yd times back in the day.

Many people today don't realize those guys played both ways.
Cannon's fourth down goal line stop of OM in the same Halloween Game cemented "the return"; otherwise, it would be just another highlight. He lived an interesting life between signing a contract with the NFL and AFL for the same season, becoming a dentist, going to prison and then working at a prison.

For some time now times have been measured by the 100 meter distance and not 100 yards. A 9.3 100 yard dash is the equivalent of 10.17 in the 100 meter dash. The world record is 9.58 100 meter dash held by H. Bolt. So if that was Cannon's time in the 100 yard dash, he was pretty damn fast, but I question whether that timing is correct. Who knows? Are there old stats posted somewhere from LSU with his race times?

Before my time, but i once heard Boots Garland talking about Cannon- he said only Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson compared to his combination of speed and size.

Jerry Stovall, for example, played running back, defensive back, punted and returned punts and kickoffs.

Hand to G-d, I wasn't sure if we were talking about a rapper, a headache powder, or just WTF until I clicked into the thread.

Seriously?
How about this: "Cannon" is only 2 more characters than "BC20" and there would have been zero confusion on this board.
2 characters. The fricking twitter generation is destroying written communication, I tell you what.

He ran a 9.3 100 as a member of the LSU track team in a meet.

Agreed; If you ask the "old folks" about shite then you get what you get. BC20 = lazy.

He ran a 9.4 in high school (and the 100 is 100 yards, a subtle difference, but an important one. And 9.3/9.4 is still pretty good, particularly for the time.)
A (probably apocryphal, but, at I've heard it at least 40 years) track and field coach reportedly said that if Cannon were to lose 15 pounds, he would be an Olympian in the 100 and if he gained 15 pounds, he would be an Olympian in the shot put. But he has to stay where he is for football, because that's how he is going to make a living.

He was a man among boys. I first saw him in high school and then play as freshman on frosh team. He was damn good and played linebacker on defense.
He was a freak. Solid runner and pass catcher a great blocker.
Cannon also won SEC 100, 220 dash and shot putt in track.
He signed with Houston in AFL and was first MVP of league. He later signed with Oakland and played tight end for Madden.
LSU platooned at the time so he did not play the entire game but he was the best player I ever saw.

A friend of mines dad played with Cannon in high school. He told me in practice one day that he went in too high for a tackle and Cannon's helmet hit him square in the testicles, sending one of them back up into his body......that hurts just thinking about it.

There was more noise an enthusiasm in the stadium back then, and it lasted THE WHOLE DAMN GAME!

2 characters.
Respectfully, two is only "2" more characters than "2" and would have been grammatically correct.
