The "put on show" capital of the universe. I guess they want us all to be in awe of the place. No.

Thanks a ton, man...this kind of thread really helps out for those of us who are traveling in. I have been to a few of the places that you mention and agree with everything you wrote.

How about some restaurant recommendations.. I'm not going to scour over tripadvisor.
I use to do some work up there. AJAX on the square has a great plate lunch. My favorite is the meatloaf. Most dishes come with jalapeno cornbread plus two sides. No reservations, seat yourself and reasonable. City Grocery is a bit more upscale and has good Shrimp and Grits.
I've been told we are eating at The Wine Bar for lunch this trip (I've never been) menu looks interesting and more pricey than the two I mentioned above.

Any idea on what kind of cover to expect for the Library this weekend? Making our first trip up to Oxford, surely hope it's not $100, that'll be a hard pass. What's with the big cover charges anyway?

I'm not completely sure about the ice chest, Oxford and "University, MS" have a bunch of really strange laws.
As for the shuttle, I usually just Uber to campus in the morning that'd probably be your best bet if you want to avoid the whole ice chest thing.
Do you want your car for later that night to drive or just want it as close to the square as possible kind of thing? If you get up early enough there is free parking right across the street from Rebel Bookstore off Jackson Ave going towards the square. There will also be multiple places where you can pay to park.
Hope that helps out, safe travels

Here is my tip to have a good time in Oxford and The Grove - know someone. Unlike most other tailgates around the SEC, the Ole Miss faithful typically aren't going to invite you into their tent in The Grove. If you don't know someone with a setup, you'll be wandering around the entire time.
I kind of agree with this but it also depends on the person, you know? I get gtfo looks sometimes and I'm a student

I'm in the same situation as you besides my mother being a professor at LSU and I still pull for Ole Miss when they play LSU, have some pride for your Alma Mater. I also watch ever LSU game and pull for LSU against every other team.

LSU all the time.
I wore red and blue ties as a pledge though and I certainly went to games and sat in student section.
Vs lsu I wore LSU colors and had a purple tent in the grove.
I really want to know how you did this, because I grew up an LSU fan but if my parents are paying for me to attend school out of state why wouldn't you want to pull for the university you attend? Sounds like you should have just went to LSU.

From the OP, Oxford looks absolutely lame as shite
Thanks for validating my decision never to make that trip as a student.
Glad I could help out

Do these bars open earlier on game days ?
Most of our bars are restaurants during the day so they will open around 10:30-11:00 A.M.
They will still have a bar atmosphere because its game day

You can walk around with a fifth of whiskey in your hand on game days but by gosh if they see a beer can your arse is grass. They will give you a warning but if you're a dick about it they have no problem giving you an Open Container and Public Intox.
I learned very quickly that the OPD doesn't play by the rules, so just keep that in mind when you're out this weekend.
Also there is city council meeting soon about a law change that would allow open container on The Square and change closing time to 1 A.M. All Week instead of just Thursday, Friday and Saturday for football weekends.

The only thing about City Grocery is that their whole menu is seasonal so it changes a lot, great food and atmosphere either way

If you're not going to the game go as early as possible and ask to get a stamp or wristband. If you go to the game, I advise to get to The Square ASAP to avoid paying a high cover.
You will only see $80-100 late in the night and they jack it up that high because they don't want more people coming in. It makes some walk away, but not most

You've been in Oxford less than 3 months...I'm curious as to what makes you such an expert.

I hate to bump an old thread but here goes. I’ll be taking my son to tour Ole Miss soon. We only have one diner in Oxford. Where would you go?
Currently have a reservation at City Grocery.
