He's not.
I do like the fact that he's one of the elite all around athletes of this freshmen class (baseball only).
The lineup could use another above average outfielder with speed and he gives that to you right now. It's all going to depend on his ability to hit at the end of the order with some type of consistency. The lineup isn't top heavy this up coming year but there's depth to mix and match some guys...it'll be interesting how fast he adapts.

I know it's not a huge sample size but hitting coach already paying dividends, you typically don't see these kind of batting averages in fall ball and what's as impressive is this is a legit staff with a ton of experience from last year despite the injuries
Drew Bianco - .429, 1 2B, 5 HR, 9 RBI
Cade Beloso - .412, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI
Gavin Dugas - .412, 3 2B, 3 BB, 2 RBI
Zack Mathis - .391, 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
CJ Willis - .375, 3 BB, 2 RBI
Drew Bianco - .429, 1 2B, 5 HR, 9 RBI
Cade Beloso - .412, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI
Gavin Dugas - .412, 3 2B, 3 BB, 2 RBI
Zack Mathis - .391, 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
CJ Willis - .375, 3 BB, 2 RBI

I think it will be insane to think ANY freshman has a starting spot when there are seasoned players... they of course if hitting like they are in fall ball will get the first opportunity. then once the season progress it will determine who gets the spot based on who is hitting. with doughty's error count being so high, has he been considered for out field possibly? plus he has been out hit by other freshman this fall......

Maybe we hired ourselves a Joe Brady of baseball offense as well.

If you want to prop the guy up because of 6 games in the playoffs where he hit .319 then go for it but in 88 season AB’s in the Cape he hit .170 which is the same he hit in 2019 @ LSU ok cupcake! Don’t put yourself on a pedestal bc you think you know more than everybody when it comes to baseball on a fricking message board.
I don't think that anybody is super pumped that Hal Hughes is starting at SS for LSU. Not everyone feels like the season is over if he does though. Maybe Hughes picks it up with his bat. Maybe Arnold gets a shot and doesn't look back. We all just want the best offensive and defensive combination for LSU to win.
People jump into every thread that Hughes goes 0 for 3 in and start kicking and screaming. When he goes 2 for 3 it's crickets. It just gets annoying.
Like I said before, if LSU is averaging 7 runs a game, hitting well as a team, and Hughes is a huge upgrade over any other glove at SS then it's perfectly fine that he plays.

Yes, prop him up. Saying that he's shown signs of life at the plate and that all hope is not lost is certainly high praise.
It only looks like I'm propping him up because of how far some of you morons go to tear him down.

I don't think I know more than everybody. I just know I don't need to shite on a kid constantly simply because he's not as good as some of the players who've come before him.

Have to agree with this. It feels like I'm constantly defending him, and appears I think he is some amazing player, but I know damn well he hasn't been. I just think it's done too often, and it's sometimes unwarranted.
Too many times we see LSU having only 3-4 hits, as a team, all game but you see 200 "Hughes sucks, he went 0 for 4" post.

Hughes needs his shot at it. We have a batting coach again...hooray. Let Hughes work with him some and see if he improves.
No one is more aware of his bat issues more than PM and if you have someone behind Hughes that can hit well above the Mendoza line...it doesn't make sense to continue letting Hughes get ABs.
Edit: again as mentioned before...the kid obviously has heart and I'm sure he's putting in the work, but I can't imagine he's that much better on D than the next best.

It's not only about hitting though. A good glove needs to be at SS, otherwise we may give back more runs than we would lose with Hughes bat.
If there is a kid who flashes some good leather, can play SS, and hits better than Hughes then I am 1000000000% certain he will play over Hughes.

Cade Doughty (a SS option) really struggled defensively at SS during the summer. I don't think he has even been there in the fall.
Arnold was brought in late, as a SS. He's been out with an injury, but if he does better than Hughes he will play.
Cairo was probably almost a sure thing to seriously push Hughes at SS, and the staff thought he was coming. But then he didn't. Can't really blame the staff for that. They had a plan in place and it didn't work. So they quickly pulled off a back up plan.

How do you not recruit SS's and get to the point where the only true defensive SS on the team is one guy who can't hit over .200?

Have you forgotten who the coach is?

Cairo was the kid sitting in PM's office when he got a call and decided to leave, correct?

Correct.
And Arnold was a SS committed to another school out west (Oregon maybe) who pulled out of his commitment when a coach got fired, and landed at LSU.

I'm going to try to turn over a new leaf this baseball season. If someone wants to have a rational discussion over differing opinions, then fine, I'll debate all day. But I'll try to ignore the idiots, until I can't anymore. Maybe if we do this, they will go away.

Who cares about baseball, it is white man's last bastion which is why anybody watches at all. On top of that the 5 bloggers that care have nothing at all in their life

I don't think you're correct. He's very smooth, and that makes guys look slower. He covers a lot of ground, imo.
