The 69 LSU Ole Miss game was televised. Archie beat LSU practically by himself. That team did not go to a bowl because Notre Dame finally decided to go bowling and we lost the spot in the Cotton Bowl and stayed home.

Hillman best of those named. Coach Mac never seemed to want to play him until his senior year when talent was so obvious he had to start him. Hillman was talented and an efficient QB.

Frustrating watching a LSU QB lead a touch down drive and not play for the next two series. Mac did that all the time. It was said at the time he did that because of injuries at the position in prior years, which LSU certainly had but Mac got ridiculous with the QB position.

Thanks for all of your responses. They recalled many fond memories from a golden era of LSU and college football. My personal favorite was Stokely as he quarterbacked LSU to victory at my first home game.

That game was played in Aurburn, AL. I didn't know their stadium was also called Death Valley.

NO! The 1969 game AUBURN VS LSU was in TIGER STADIUM and it was televised as well. In that game Jimmy Gilbert threw a halfback option pass to Andy Hamilton for LSU's first score and the first score of the game. Later George Bevan blocked AUBURN's extra point that would have tied the game and allowed LSU to win 21-20 over Pat Sullivan's AUBURN TIGERS. Interesting note about that game. Coach Mac had Eddie Ray punt the ball on 3rd down when AUBURN had LSU pinned deep by the own end-zone. Also Buddy Lee and Butch Duhe played in that game that day.

Wrong. I was sitting in the south end zone with my dad for that game. It was definitely in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

That game was in Tiger Stadium, it was on Oct. 25th. and the game was on TV. LSU won that game, the following week they loss to Old Mrs. in Jackson to finish the year 9-1. That would be 1969. The year they didn't go to a bowl game with a 9-1 record. Those were the only two games that were televised that year.
FYI
And yes, Bevan was one of the team captains that year, the other, Robert (Red) Ryder.

Yep. Game was in TS. I remember it as a great day for football. Kinda overcast and not too hot. One of the best games ever in TS.

BuzBomb, this quote appears as if you are referring to the LSU-Auburn game. The previous argument that I had with "rtgr" was that Butch Duhe played in the following game, the LSU-Ole Miss game. I have said that Coach Mac inserted Butch Duhe in that game after an Ole Miss fumble right around their own 20 yard line, with LSU ahead 23-12 late in the 3rd qtr or early 4th qtr, and that we lost the ball on a fumble almost inmediately after Duhe went into the game. Hillman had sat for several series in a row when we had the 23-12 lead, even though he is the one that was the QB for most, if not all, of the 23 points.

"rtgr" has already established that Duhe pretty much was the clipboard holder 3rd string QB that year, which he apologized for thinking that Duhe was a freshman that year.

I am trying to prove my claim that Duhe was inserted in the Ole Miss game. Do you have clear memory that Duhe indeed played briefly in the LSU-Ole Miss game?

Thanks for your reply, or anybody else that can remember that far back.

First PLAY of the game. Game was a day time telecast. Beat the Heisman winner, Sullivan, in Tiger Stadium.

chatuey,

Butch Duhe was the 3rd string QB; however, he did get playing time throughout the 1969 season including in significant games. He did play in the AUBURN game that year. I have to see if I can come up with some stats that shows this. If anyone has the 1970 LSU FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE it will have that information. I have the 1969 LSU FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE, but that won't help.

I was a freshman in 1970 and i swore i thought that Duhe never played a down for LSU--that he was a freshman in 1969. but he's listed as a 1969 letterman: LINK

Regarding the A&M game, "School seemed to be out for A&M. But it wasn't. On third down, from the Aggie 21, qb Lex James put up a long one in search of Hugh McElroy. LSU defender Paul Lyons had McElroy covered, but instead of playing it soft, went for the interception-and didn't get it! McElroy gathered it in and crossed the goal with 13 seconds left on the clock. The Tigers were a 20-18 loser."
This was the opener for the 1970 season.
The 1969 game against Auburn was played in Tiger Stadium. The 1970 game at Jordan-Hare was won by the Tigers, 17-9, in the mud and featured the goal line stop of Wallace Clark by Mike Anderson.

In the '69 Ole Miss game at Jackson, George Bevan said, "Not counting the Ole Miss game, we missed only 19 tackles all season. Against Ole Miss, we missed 18 and I bet Archie was responsible for 15."
"On one 9 yard scoring pass, Manning ran 30 yards behind the line of scrimmage before releasing the ball. In the third quarter with the Rebs trailing 23-18, Manning faced a third-and-sixteen at the LSU 28. He passed for 15 then sneaked for the first down. Three plays later, he faced third-and-10 at the LSU 11. He passed for 10 then sneaked for the score. And then he ran it across for 2-points to give the Rebs a 3 point lead.
Mike Hillman rallied his troops, moving the Tigers from their 20 to the Rebel 23. With 65 seconds left, it was fourth-and-8. McClendon faced an agonizing decision: field goal for a tie or a first down to stay alive for a winning score. Nine years before, faced with a similar situation in Oxford, Johnny Vaught went for 3 and a 6-6 tie, the only blot in a 10-0-1 season. This time, Mac told Hillman, "You've taken us this far, now take us in." The play was a pass to tight end Bill Stober who was hit from three sides as Hillman's pass came to him, the ball and the ball game tumbling away."

Archie Manning beat LSU in 1968 and 1969 almost single-handedly. In my opinion, he is the greatest college qb of all-time. I would have loved to see him play for a decent team in the NFL.
Quite probably the Manning family would have a couple more NFL Championships if he had.

The game accounts are from Pete Finney's book, "The Fighting Tigers, 1893-1993, 100 years of LSU Football".
The only mention of Butch Duhe getting into any games was as a holder for pk's.

Regarding Trey Prather, Terry Bradshaw once said that of the group of he, Prather, Joe Ferguson and Bert Jones, Prather was the best of the bunch. Like somebody else said, what a terrible waste!

Butch Duhe's 1969 stats:

22-8-0-175-2

QB rating: 133.181

I think some are confusing Buddy Lee and Butch, Buddy was the number 2 QB in 1969.

Buddy Lee's stats:

76-37-4-470-3

Qb rating:

103.131

Be fair and look up Archie's stats, he had two sub par years and one great year (1969).

If I vote an All time Ole Miss team Eli would get my vote as there best QB.

Remember Archie finished with more Ints than passing TD's and his qb rating isn't near the 140.00 range that is looked at as the min. for most great Qb's.

Had Hillman stayed in the 69 game and not been replaced LSU would have likely won.

I am with MiketheTiger69 on this one. He was a lot of fun to watch, except when he played against LSU it was no fun at all!

Archie Manning did everything with no supporting cast at all. He had an all SEC TE, I think for a couple of years but that was about it. He was freaking amazing.

I have all the LSU stats back to 1957 and many years dating all the way back to 1937 (I have 37, 38, 41).

I'm working on putting together what stats I can find on the 1908 team.
