I believe Mett was 5-12 from shotgun last week. 3 of the 7 incompletions were drops from WRs. 8/12 is pretty good. Go shotgun, spread the defense out. This opens up natural running lanes for our RBs and natural pockest of space for our WRs to get open and sit in.

The shotgun gives you an extra 1/2 second or so. That could be a big advantage vs a stout pass rush.

I wasnt thinking about the game this coming weekend i was thinking about last weekend. But, we better go shotgun way more this weekend. If we go under center and do the slow 3 step drops, Clowney will be back there waiting for Mett to finish his 2nd step before he blows him up.

Pistol formation would work very nice for him

Pistol formation is more suited to a mobile QB, ie the reason Flynn, RP, and JJ ran it and not so much J Lee.

He needs to be in the shotgun because it's the only way he's going to pick up the backside blitz as of now. Not saying they can't work on it with him and he learn to see it coming from under center but pistol is not something I think you ever see him run here.

I think Mett could work out of the pistol or a variation of it. Right now our average first down run is 6.1 yards and that is coming out of the I-Formation with Copeland blocking. If you look at the stat splits Mett is having more success from a shotgun formation. With the line issues and the fact that the game hasn't quite "slowed" down for Mett why would you not leave him in a formation where he can read defenses pre snap and if he needs to make a quick throw or adjustment, he's already in position to do so.

Based on the stats why not line up in the pistol with Copeland lined up to the left of Mett and Ware behind him. That way you could still run in an offset-I and Mett would be in a position to read the defense pre snap. It would also allow us another blocker to shore up the left (or with a shift, the right) side on pass plays.

Problem is, based on the article that I read today Krags and Mett think the answer is a five step drop and not shotgun which just baffles me considering we have a less than agile left tackle and Mett has sandbags for legs. LINK

I think he is fine under center we just need to throw some quick slants to get the corners to play tight, then air it out on some double moves when they bite.Quick slant are a high% play and would help Mett get into some type of rythm, and pressure wouldn't be an issue.

Dude will get about 2.5 steps into that drop before clowey is knocking his dick in the dirt

Seems obvious to me our best bet to neutralize this pass rush to some degree would be quick routes out of the shotgun. But I'm sure they'll stick with the double tights under center.

I really hope mett begins to work on some footwork drills and tries to improve his speed/quickness.

Shouldn't the coaching staff change their preferences to fit their personnel?

that's been one of my problems with Miles and the coaching staff, they try to force someone do do what they are not yet ready to do.

I thought that was a big problem with Lee's performance, specially in the first year.

Mettenberger said taking the snap under center with a five-step drop allows him to read the defense better than if he has to take his eyes off the opponent momentarily to catch a shotgun snap."

Ok I've read this 4 times, and it still sounds stupid

He lacks strength and agility even for a white QB. Needs serious work in the weight room and speed/agility drills.

He'd be fine under center if he got some more separation from the line on his drop. When I was playing our coaches would preach the importance of the first step in a 3 or 5 step drop. Your first 2 steps are always to get some distance between yourself and the line. Your 3rd, or in the case of a 5 step drop, your 3rd 4th and 5th steps are gathering steps so you can transfer your weight and step into your throw.

That's mett's problem under center. His first steps aren't getting him far enough away from the line.

I want to say 5 of 13 but 4 of those were drops. 9 of 13 isn't bad

Because it makes no sense. Where is the rationale in going to a 5 step drop if you can't handle a 3 step? And it really concerns me that Mett and Krags seem to think this is way to address the issue.

So anybody still thinks it's weird for me to ask if Rivers could beat USCe? Going to a 5 step drop is going to take Mett out of this game.
