Would be really curious to see some stats on this from the past 10 years or so. It seems that the team that wins most years is the team full of returning 4th and 5th year players.

They almost always are. Young talent is great to supplement, but you can’t have a team full of that and expect to win a title. You need experience and leadership at every level in all 3 phases. Indiana has that.

I know everyone likes to defend Lane by saying you can’t win a national championship at a school like Ole Miss, but that’s likely not true anymore.

Lane's primary concern was the sustainability of collectives cutting checks to players for nothing in return. The NCAA is supposed to be cracking down on this, and there is a push for Congress to get involved. His fears may turn out to be unfounded, but this is the info I received from someone who would know. In a true 3rd party NIL landscape, Ole Miss gets left behind again by the bigger brands.

At the end of the day, he's a job hopper. I think his mind was set on leaving OM this season. He had no idea they would be as good as they turned out to be because, on paper, none of this should have been happening.

Because their coach is brilliant in a profession devoid of intelligence. Also he is a grinder unlike ole Catholic Kelly.

His evaluation process involves watching hours of film and evaluating what you do in a game. He could care less what your star ranking is or was. He has stated this.

Have you seen their OL play?
this and their coaching gets the most out of their players. They are prepared mentally and situationally.

Getting 'surprised' is very bad for players. Facing unexpected situations might not cause panic, but they will revert to what they know. If the opponent coaching is worth a shite, that is exactly the setup they were counting on and the result will be bad for you.

The absolute worst thing for a player is for them to be giving everything they got, but it isn't good enough because coaching didn't set them up to be successful. Think running the same plays all year long with no additions or tweaks. By the time the bowl game rolls around opponents are scheming to defeat those plays. No matter how hard you try, you will lose. For a player that's when you lose faith in your coaches.

Their coaching does the best they can to prepare them for all possible scenarios and they have faith that when something comes up the coaches guidance will fix it for them as long as they keep putting out. That way they act as a squad, not a bunch of Individuals. Every player, because of faith in their coaches, knows if they do their job good things happen. No heros, no villans.

Indiana:

19/22 starters are juniors/seniors.

10 senior starters
9 junior starters
2 sophomore starters
1 freshman starter

They are 1) coached well and 2) have a lot of game experience

Indiana recruits the guys that don’t stand out with stats compared to other recruits. They recruit guys from the tough high schools that play actual competition. These guys are coachable and fundamentally sound.

When you have guys that are sticking out stats wise at the high school level, often times they are playing bad competition..and they end up not translating at the high D1 level *cough cough..LSU*. That’s been our mistake the past years.

Mendoza isn't Burrow, and this isn't the first season Cignetti has won at IU. He was 11-2 last year with a different QB...which a pretty remarkable accomplishment at a program that had ONE winning season (not counting 2020) in the nearly 30 years before Cignetti arrived. IU didn't win yesterday because their QB had a generational performance. They won because in every aspect they dominated Alabama. Including just physically kicking their arse on both sides of the ball...something a QB would have little to do with

This isn't a result of one great player. It's a total overhaul of one of the historically worst programs in college football.
