lots of overstatements in this thread .. smoke went to the CWS twice and reached the super regionals three times at LSU and won over 200 games in five years ... he wasn't a piece of crap like some are claiming ... and this isn't the worst LSU baseball team since the 1960s either .. some don't remember the pre-skip dark ages of lsu baseball apparently ..

simple going after highly touted kids that won't ever step on campus,and not going after good players that want to play,and ain't thinking about money

More respect or just liked them better as buddies to go drinking with?
Sorry but I would much rather a coach that always puts the success of the team first rather than coddling players and their feelings. My guess is that Smoke was just more buddy buddy with certain players while Mainieri is more of a father figure, tough love coach.
None of that matters though. What matters is championships. Mainieri wins them and Smoke didnt.

No comparison. Smoke is a complete ads wipe and was only out for himself. Total dick to his players. Had to deal with him at ulm.
