Being unable to get a couple yards on third down has been atrocious. So there's that. Right?

This list is full of inaccuracies. OU has ran for an average of 4 YP attempt this year. I’m not going to go poke more holes

Oklahoma has 114 rush attempts for 525 yards, an average of 4.1 yards per attempt.
In their one P4 game, they had 40 rush attempts for 138 yards.. 3.45 yards per attempt.

12. Oklahoma 3.45
It’s entirely possible I fat fingered a number somewhere. But that ain’t one of them.

Interestingly, SEC Stat Cat says LSU has an 83% success rate on 3rd down runs with 1-3 yards to gain. Which would be tied with Texas for 5th in the SEC.
Theoretically that should mean we are converting 83% of the time when we run on 3rd & 1-3. I’ll admit that seems.. pretty high. I don’t know how much I trust SEC Stat Cat and I don’t have time to go chart every 3rd & short right this second.. so take it for what it’s worth.
Also SEC Stat Cat doesn’t give me a way to filter by P4 competition for the whole conference. If I filter by just LSU’s games against Clemson and Florida, it says we have a 75% success rate running on 3rd & 1-3 (3 out of 4 attempts). I might go through the play-by-plays later to check the accuracy of that.

We ran the ball well on 3rd and short against Clemson. Florida not so much.

Well we have had some mighty struggles in short yardage. Maybe most were pass attempts?

So I went and pulled together the 3rd & short numbers manually from the ESPn play-by-play (defining as 3rd & 3 or less).
Conversions/attempts (conversion %):
Run: 5/7 (71.4%)
Pass: 4/7 (57.1%)
Total: 9/14 (64.3%)
SEC Stat Cat seems to be missing a failed attempt vs. Florida. 71.4% on rush attempts certainly places us lower among SEC teams, tied for #9 in the conference if you believe that the numbers are accurate for everyone else.
But.. yeah, we have been worse passing on 3rd & short than running. Albeit by one play.

This is encouraging to read. My concern/frustration is we seem to be ok running on 1st and 2nd downs, or even 3rd and long. But we struggle to get any push on 3rd and short or 4th and short (a hallmark characteristic of all of our teams under Kelly....not a knock but an observation). How many times have we seen this team (and other Kelly teams) get stuffed on 3-1, 3-2 or 4-1, 4-goal situations. Even when we bring in a 3rd tight end, or go jumbo package with a FB or extra blocker, we just seem to always get blown up. Looking at the Florida game, when Cauble mentioned that everyone wants to know "why we can't run the ball" this is what he is referring to. Les used to say that 3rd and short comes down to who wants it more. And they practiced that, ALOT. Converting those 3rd and short plays leads to momentum and longer drives. I am to the point where I hope we don't ever run in 3rd or 4th and short. Throw a screen, or a drag route or a slant to Anderson...something. Just stop getting blown up on short yardage.....just my 2 cents

Idk how many times but you must’ve missed this game-clinching 3rd & 1 last weekend.

This is really interesting. I know it’s not how averages work, but I wonder what our average against Florida would be if we took out that last big run AND the subsequent kneel downs.

I saw that one, and we went 6/17 on 3rd down....with many of those 11 coming on 3rd and short.

We only rushed 3 other times on 3rd down.

If Nuss doesn’t run because he’s injured then maybe he should sit
