Garry James was the star recruit in 1980. Hilliard was no slouch but I remember James having the most publicity.
When the pads went on and Hilliard was just as fast but heavier and more bruising, he was a man among boys. Much like Faulk, he could take over a game. I remember sitting in the south endzone and our offense was on the far northern end. It was a day game and we could see off in the distance Hilliard break through the line and come racing toward us like a freight train. It was awesome.
Most forget for the 3-4 years before the Hilliard/James gang, RB was by committee and even then we didn't have anyone that went over a few hundred yards. The gang rushed for about 1700 yards a season all four seasons except the sophomore year where they only gained about 1200.
1982 was an awesome year to see the rushing/pounding game for the Tigers.

There was an iconic (to me at least ) photo of him catching a screen pass against Florida his freshman year. The defender went low and Dalton highstepped over him. The photog caught the exact moment. I think the pic made it on the cover of SI.

Same class as me...every one was talking about Garry James, but Dalton came out against Oregon St and showed some serious moves. The Dalton and James gang was born that day.

He was AMAZING. I went to the game against UFORFEIT in Gainesville his freshman year and he destroyed them. His game would translate to any era . I loved his stride and those tree trunk legs. One of my favorites.

He's is my second favorite LSU player only behind Charles Alexander.
Started following his career while he was Patterson HS, where he and Butler formed one of the greatest RB duos in Louisiana HS football history.

He used to frequent a bar I worked at, big tipper comparatively speaking.

As the old play-by-play announcer for Tiger Vision (who’s name escapes me) once said “He’s slicker than jelly on a door knob!”

I loved Kevan and Dalton ,The only fault I found with Kevan is that he didnt pick his feet up until he hit the line of scrimmage as a result a hand on his ankle sometimes brought him down behind the line of scrimmage , hilliard didnt have that problem , they were both under rated .! Keven would carry the patriots from 20 to 20 and then fake to him and and give it to a bigger back ! that was why he was under rated !

And I was there.
It was a beautiful thing to watch two freshman RBs gain over 100 yds each in their first game, particularly after the previous season where Jessie Myles led the team in rushing with just over 400 yds.

Those were my years at LSU. Dalton was a best of a player. Keep in mind that back then, SEC football was all defense and running the football. That LSU team was quite good during those years.
Damn, I’m getting Old.

Troof.
Gary James was the most heralded recruit ever at LSU up to that time. Dalton was always mentioned as “also very good”. Both were great, but Hilliard was better and was an all time great Tiger.

Favorite all time player. He is the reason I am a tiger football fanatic. I can remember That screen pass against UF like it was yesterday.

All I know is that he single handedly destroyed my alma mater back in his high school days. I wasn’t born then but it apparently stuck around in the community

Bear Bryant’s last year, the Dalton- James gang invaded Bama and beat thier arse 20-10. I was there and it was awesome.

I bagged groceries in HS while he was at LSU and he came in one day. Was wearing the short track shorts. His thighs looked abnormal they were so disproportionately huge. Would have hated to tackle him.

Had several classes with Dalton our freshman year. Sat next to him in history. Also played basketball with him and Rydal Melancon several times in the spring. He was a great guy, quite but very gracious. 82 was a great year, beating Bama in Birmingham and FSU the night it rained Oranges. Almost beating Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

Saw him in the gym armory one day playing with some other players. Dunked the basketball from a flat footed start ... ridiculous power in those legs. His thighs put Kieland Williams’ calves to shame.

Still the best I’ve ever seen at LSU. Nobody moved like him.
