he's more of a player without a below-average tool than one loaded with plus ones,
good analysis, imo

no, he's a poor man's david miller.

I wasn't so much talking numbers as just they kind of player he is and the fact that he can do so much. Their have been better hitters, better, base stealers, not sure if their have been better outfielders but not sure if anyone has been better as a total package.

in order to be one of the greatest ever, the numbers have to match up. just my opinion
this is his first truly elite season

jon zeringue is really similar to mahtook. probably a better hitter and a stronger arm, but not as good defensively and slower

Agreed. Which means he can never be in the same category as Furniss, Hill, Hawpe, Fontenot, etc.

Definitely not in the same category as Hawpe. But Hill...maybe.

True, but it is difficult to compare numbers to someone that played in the juiced bat/player era. He is head and shoulders ahead of Dean when talking all around players.

Dean had a much more impressive career and was a much bigger component of LSU's baseball accomplishments than Mahtook will ever be. Mahtook may be the more gifted player though by the time he leaves LSU.

Dean had a better career at LSU, but I don't think his tools will translate in the pros.
Edit: However, I didn't think Belt 1b from Texas would make it either and he's starting for the Giants.

dont know about head and shoulders, but his speed gives him a slight nod
as for hawpe and fontenot, both were 2 year guys. not sure if they are in the discussion of all time LSU greats.

I disagree. Hawpe only had one "elite" year (due to injury), and I think his numbers would be comparable to Hill's. Furniss is obviously in another universe. But even then we're still just talking offense, and there is more to his game than that.

Dean was a great hitter, and that's where it ends. Mahtook is a more gifted player already, it doesn't matter if he ends up with less HRs, RBIs, etc.

I'd like to see what Mikie could do with the bats from 1997.

probably similar to what guys like mike koerner and justin bowles did...20-25 HR's

Speed, defense, and arm all go to Mahtook..although I realize that may be a little harsh for Dean since his arm was dead when he arrived.

I think mahtook gets taken around 15-20 in the draft

It's really tough to say. There has been two major bat changes since then and he is still in double figures.

I agree he does sometimes get bad jumps/reads on balls, but it usually isn't noticeable because he speed bails him out. Leon was a better center fielder, imo. Also, he's a fastball hitter, and guys like that can sometimes struggle getting used to pitching at the next level. I'd like to see him take a more gap to gap approach at the plate as well.
With all that said, I think he'll get drafted in the first round because the draft isn't about what you are, it's about what teams think you can be.
