Their scoring average would be insane. Imagine the stats when other teams couldn't double/triple team PP, CJ, and Shaq?? You could add any number of past players at 3-4 and they would be tough to beat. I think the key would be at 4. We would need an unselfish rebounder/shot blocker. Add a scoring threat & rebounder at 3...UH and UCLA are doomed. My question would be...Who would coach this team? Dale blew it with Stanley, Shaq, and CJ so he's eliminated. If you had the choice of any coach...who would you choose??

Of our coaches, though, I'd probably have to take Trent Johnson. Between him, Brady and Dale, he seemed to have the best overall grasp of Xs and Os (slim pickings in that respect, imo). He just couldn't get enough talent here to play for him. With the talent already there for him . . . well, I'll just say this: if he could get that 2009 team to the second round, he could probably get this team to a championship.
On second thought, can we just skip the coach and just let Pete run the game on the floor?

In that sense, yes. But Pettit played in a different generation than Macklin, and did not have his athleticism (from what I've seen)
Pettit not athletic? Check out these highlights and tell me that.

Plus Pettit was over 6'9" and Macklin a little under 6'7". Pettit had a much better outside shot, more moves and was an equally good rebounder.
Make no mistake, Bob Pettit was one of the all time greats!

quote:I have never made that mistake, and I don't intend to ever make it. But the problem with all time greats is that time doesn't stand still. Guys that dominated Football, Basketball, Track, etc., 50 or 60 years ago would likely be merely stars for their team in todays leagues. There are a few rare exceptions (Wilt comes to mind). But for most athletes more than a generation ago, the game has evolved and the players with it. The competition is simply of a much different caliber.
Make no mistake, Bob Pettit was one of the all time greats!
In 1954, when Pettit entered the NBA, the world record high jump was just under 7 feet. That would not have made the top 5 in high school last year. The world record in the 100m was 10.2, which would have finished outside the top 5 in the NCAAs last year. And the world record in the bench press was something under 236.5 kgs (which was the record set in 1972). The current collegiate record is 320 kgs (the current world record is 488.64 kgs, more than double the record when Pettit retired from basketball). These were all world records from that era that would not even be among the top performances in lower leve competition today.
Bodies of elite physical athletes have changed over the decades. The guy who seemed super fast, athletic and strong in the '50s could very easily look like just another really good player today. Heck, I'm a tad concerned about Macklin being out of date; it was over 30 years ago when he played.

Starting lineup:
Shaq
Bob Pettit
John Williams
Pete Maravich
Ethen Martin
Substitutes:
Stanley Roberts
Rudy Macklin
Stromile Swift
Dwayne Scales
Chris Jackson
Howard Carter
Marcus Thorton
Ronnie Henderson
ETA: This combination of platers gives LSU incredible versatility offensively. You have outstanding three point shooters in the starting lineup, as well as coming off the bench. And with Shaq and Stanley Roberts you have dominating low post players. The team even has players who could create their own shots off the dribble and penetrate as well. The one role I left off the team was the animal defender who could neutralize another team's best threat. But I figured there were more than enough shot blockers to allow the guards to focus on perimeter defense.

LSU Basketball 16-man all-century team
was put together by decade and isn't a good base for an All Time LSU top 16 man team.
John Williams was better than almost 3/4 of that all time team, even the LSU SID will tell Williams should have been on that team.
But politics and bad blood by some (as he left early for the NBA as So.) and this is why he was left off.
John is one of the top 6-7 best players at LSU and that is saying a lot when you look at the talent that has come out of LSU.

CJ's strength was his quick shot. how would that be an advantage on a team with Pete and Shaq?
He was a phenom with the quick shot and the 3 point line, but I was never that impressed with his defense and passing. both things we need with Shaq on the team. BTW Pete was not known for any defense either. we need some guards that would play defense some of the time. Ethan was not the best defender, but he got a bunch of steals and certainly tried to defend. We will never know what Livingston could have done if he was healthy.
John Williams could serve as a point forward. He had tremendous passing skills. A good defender, but not great.
Pettit and Shaq defended and rebounded.
Not a bad defensive team if the point can hold up. As a result, I still think Ethan would be the best choice.

BATON ROUGE -- LSU’s celebration of 100 years of collegiate basketball begins on Wednesday as balloting will begin on the first of a series of All-Decade Teams that will eventually lead to the selection of an All-Century team of LSU players.
The voting will be online at www.LSUsports.net and will begin at 10 a.m. CT on Wednesday with the unveiling of the nominees for the All-Decade teams of the 1940s and 1950s. Fans will be asked to choose their five top players from each of the decades. Nomination information on the candidates, selected by the centennial committee, will be available on line and in the game program Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the LSU-Auburn game at the Maravich Center.
Fans can vote on the 1940s and 1950s team through Feb. 15
The 1960s and 1970s All-Decade team ballots will be unveiled on Jan. 26 at the Arkansas game, the 1980s and 1990s ballot will be shown for the first time at the Feb. 9 game with Tennessee and the final all-decade ballot from the 2000s will be available for voting on the day of the Kentucky game on Feb. 16.
The all-decade team, along with the early years team from 1909-1939 (that will be selected by the centennial committee) will be announced at the final home game of the 2008 season on March 5 against Alabama. All former players who make the all-decade teams will be eligible for the ballot for the All-Century team with voting to take place in the summer and early fall.
Starting in February, fans will also be able to go to the LSUsports.net site and nominate their top LSU basketball moments for the list of 100 greatest moments in LSU basketball and a site will be created that will allow former players and LSU basketball staff members to provide their latest contact information to the athletic department so they can receive information about the 100th anniversary reunion of former players that will take place in the Maravich Center on Jan. 30, 2009, the night the All-Century team will be announced.
“We have already heard from several former players and members of the centennial committee who have old pictures and films of games that they are getting to us to be able to further showcase the history of LSU basketball,” said centennial co-chairman Kent Lowe, Senior Associate SID at LSU. “This voting on the all-decade teams is already drawing the interest of our fans and we look forward over the next several weeks to see how the voting plays out.”

so with your last two posts are you just wanting to point out that your original statement "LSU Basketball 16-man all-century team was put together by decade and isn't a good base for an All Time LSU top 16 man team" is wrong? people voted from a big list comprised of every all-decade team to determine the all-century team regardless of what decade they played in. try to understand what you are talking about before you post.

I disagree. We would have a ton of depth. You are vastly underestimating some of our best players from 20+ years ago. I can think of several (Taz M, TT, Stromile, etc.) within the past 20 that would be unreal 1-1 or even being left open due to the double teams on CJ, PP, and Shaq. You can't even factor what CJ & PP would do 1-1 on a consistent basis. Remember what CJ did to Georgetown 5-1 at the end of that game. CJ, PP, & Shaq could make the final 4 with 3 guys from the rant!
