correct. he started having trouble locating pitches and overcompensated in bad counts by throwing the ball right down the middle.
He wasn’t having trouble locating his changeup. He was still hitting his spot with it, which was down. He just wasn’t getting the swing and miss early in counts because opponents quit chasing it, because they were looking for it.
He then started missing spots with his fastball and breaking ball, because they aren’t good enough pitches to leave middle middle. So the walks came. When the walks came, he would start leaving pitches in bad spots, and they were getting hit.
To circle back, it all goes back to the changeup becoming less effective, because it wasn’t producing swing and miss to get ahead anymore. Because they were expecting it early in counts.
The changeup can play with Arkansas because they are very aggressive, but don’t expect them to come out trying to hunt fastballs like they did last time they faced him.

It is what it is. You need to start him.
If he can go 3 or 4 innings and hold them to a max of 3 runs, I’d say that’s a win. Anything better than that is just icing on the cak
I think if Jay were trying to reasonably map out his pitching plan it would be at least 4 IP from the starter and piecing the next 5 innings together with the potential for Shores to pitch up to 2-3 innings and Eyanson available to appear for an inning (if necessary).
If LSU gets to the 9th with a small lead (1-3 runs) I think there is a pretty good chance we see Eyanson try to close it out. Using him to lock down a win would be FAR more important than saving the 10-20 pitches he would have to throw. That, even combined with the 40 pitches he threw on Monday wouldn't hurt his ability to start on Sunday.

He really only has two good pitches. Change up to setup the fastball. Need more variety out of a started to give us length in this game.

Leaned on the changeup too much and teams figured it out.
In this ballpark, that’s not as likely to hurt him.

In the SoCon. Mayers at least went 5.2 against a SEC team in a regional with 8Ks, 3 hits and 2 ERs. I would take that in a heartbeat today.

If they layoff the change and he starts walking guys it does. The wind blowing out means they can do damage if he gets behind.

Well that applies to anybody.

Give him the start , he deserves a shot

of the teams left, Arky has the power to punish a hung changeup even in this park.

Hopefully wind is blowing in and he'll bounce back.

Meh. Most other guys have other pitches they can lean on, and enough “nasty” for swing and miss in the zone. I’m not sure Cowan does.
I do think he starts and I think they’re hoping for once through the lineup at minimum with 5 innings being absolute best outcome.

If he has to pitch then, so be it. But its not time to take a chance if we have other more reliable options.

More fastballs more better

I personally hope to never see you on this board again. If LSU wins tonight I vote you are banned until the CWS is over. GO TO ANOTHER BOARD WE DONT WANT YOU HERE!!

I think he will pitch this evening--whether he starts or relieves.
Hopefully, Zac will pitch a strong game, whether it is one inning or five. This will be his chance.

Hopefully, I’m wrong but they will be sitting on change up tonight.

Opponents were expecting the change so they weren’t chasing it low and when it was hung they hammered it.
They were expecting it because they knew they could ignore the fastball because he wasn’t locating it. LSUminati is right. It isn’t scouting that turned the tables on Cowan, it is poor control.

No starter or long reliever can get through more than one trip through the opposing team’s lineup with 2 pitches. AR will kill him. He needs at least a 3rd reliable pitch, curve or slider. They are all sitting change up and killing him.

I could be wrong on remembering who Ben was talking about but I thought it was Cowan. During 1 of his outings. Ben said something like his changeup is like at 40%, but the game he was in at that time, he was dealing, and was throwing nothing but changeups and Ben even made notice of how many he was throwing.
His next 3-4 appearances in that stretch is where he looked unhittable.
not sure about his relief appearances since his decline, but his start, feels like he went more fastballs on top of the fact that his changeup not being located as well.
If he starts, i'm hoping he's 80%+ changeups IF he's locating it. makes that 90mph much more effective.
