The problem is teaching isn't that hard. Being a really good teacher is, but there is practically no incentive to be a good teacher.

When I first started working in 2006, I made $26,000. I owned a house, granted I had two friends paying me rent, but I lived fine.

No, it's more like 8.5 months a year but I rounded up to 9.

In EBR teachers get 10 weeks off for the summer, 2 full weeks off for Christmas and New Year's, 1 full week off for Thanksgiving, 1 full week off (this year it was 1 week + 1 day) for Easter.....er....I mean, Spring break, and 3 or 4 days off for Fall break.

Do the math....

ETA: I left off days off for Mardi Gras (2 days) and MLK birthday.

I don't know about you but in O&G anyone after 10 years will be getting 4 weeks vacation plus the normal 10 days(for holidays). Figured compared to the average person they get an extra 2 months off.

My mom always had to work a week or two before and after school started.

I think they get paid appropriately considering the amount of time off and like another poster said, its not hard to be a teacher.

They absolutely should get paid more.

Based on what exactly?

Their private school counterparts often make less

My mother, stepmother, aunt, uncle, and both grandparents were all teachers and I can say this is exactly what they do. Go into your average high school, you wwon't find many teachers actually teaching.

Complete bullshite and if you think otherwise you're an arse.

If you aren't an effective teacher you will be found out quickly and will not be a teacher anymore. You can maybe get away with being lazy if you are only teaching a bunch of smart kids....but we know that doesn't happen.

Not surprised the internet tough guys on the OT don't see the value in teachers and paying them appropriately.

I teach as an adjunct prof. Part of my pay is based on the fact that I have to grade papers at home. I work on material, at home. I do tons of shite at home. If I don't like it, I go find something else to do.

Too bad for your mom.

Today teachers in EBR start two DAYS before the students show up and stay one DAY more after the students finish for the year.

I could not be a teacher because I would be in jail the first time one of the snotty-nosed brats or their parent back talked me, but they are fairly compensated (including their extremely generous retirement and other benefit plans) for the amount of actual days they have to show up for work.

My wife taught for four years and I still have no idea how much any individual teacher should be paid, let alone all of them.

How can you know this?

Seems like you are bud. You're easily my least favorite poster anyway. At least trolls don't believe the things they say.

Just noting the crossover Russian that's all.

OHHHH but they do a lot of work at home too!!

Its not like anyone else has to do extra work. I routinely have to wake up at 1-2am to fix shite before the rest of the world notices something went wrong.

You want to know what is hard and who doesnt get paid?

My MIL works at a public HS and works with the "special" kids. Her avg day is spent fending off kids that could crush her and dont know any better and on many occassions wiping their arse because because they shite themselves again this week.

She would kill to make anywhere near 28k much less 38k as well.

Tell you what.. If you are a teacher and you have to change your student's diaper and wipe their arse I will agree that you should get more money. Page me when that occurs.

Teachers bitch and moan about pay more than any other group of employees. Yet they get the most fricking time off short of firefighters and shift workers. At least firefighters know they have it good and keep their mouths shut.
