I don't know about you but in O&G anyone after 10 years will be getting 4 weeks vacation plus the normal 10 days(for holidays). Figured compared to the average person they get an extra 2 months off.

My mom always had to work a week or two before and after school started.

Exactly. The days kids are off arent always the same as teachers.

Until someone actually lives with a teacher, theyll never know everything a teacher does away from school.

I've dated them and my mom was a teacher. My mom even thinks its a sweet gig. If they are underpaid tell them to get another job.

I lived with a teacher.. My mom was a teacher and so was my grandmother both for a private school. She taught me when I was in 7th grade even. She retired this year. She made 16k last year. I think when she taught me in 7th grade which was 20 years ago she may have made 14k. Pretty sure my grandmother made around the same maybe a little more and she worked there for over 30 years. Neither really complained about it either. They enjoyed the work. Now my dad was the breadwinner in the family by far.

I may have to bow out of this discussion. Having taught myself the education system is a hot button for me. Students, parents, and politicians are crazier than ever. Those lazy teachers who can't get fired because of a union or tenure are the reasons the fantastic teachers can't demand higher pay. I think they should make it more difficult to become a teacher and up the salaries some to attract talented individuals to the profession.

Thankfully no other profession other than teachers has to maintain professional education advancement and never has to work other than 9 to 5, Monday through Friday and never has to take work home.

I agree. Great teachers are underpaid but 99 percent don't fall in that category.

if they don't like it, they can take another job. its not like its a secret that you aren't going to get rich by being a teacher.

Seriously..

I wish my phone didnt go off like a bullhorn at 2am while I stumble accross the house to my office. But shite has to get done.

I wish I didnt have to carry a phone on me at all times just incase some higher up has a brain fart and wants something done. Im on call 24/7 365 and like many others that do it its just a way of life for me. Hell at my previous job when Katrina hit I had to return to work at Stennis the next fricking day. Take a look at a map of Katrina's path and see where Stennis is. Show me a teacher that had to do that.

Teachers don't teach for the money. Also they are not going to magically have more money simply because they have good teachers. It's just not happening. I want teachers to have some skin in the game. If your students suck, your pay goes down. Accountability. But I'm sure you won't agree with that either. They also need to quit teaching to the test. frick that noise. Teach kids what they can use, not what's required to pass the LEAP or IOWA tests.

I think teachers compare themselves to other govt workers and not private sector.

Maybe so, which means they will always be disappointed. If only there was a way for them to know what teachers' salaries were before they chose to become a teacher.....

She worked for a parochial school (public school teachers make a shite load more). She went from teaching to working in the office and kept the same pay. She works more of the year than the teachers they have do too. She laughs at how little they pay her but she considers it more like charity work I believe. My parents are not hurting for money. Now my grandmother was fairly poor and worked there for many years making nothing but she loved her job. Teaching came first and her pay came second.

I'm likely to slap the next teacher I hear bitch. They could always do what I did. Get a big boy job and teach part time.

That's what they make in 9 months, not a year.

And here in Arlington County they make a good bit more than 38K per 9 months. Of course, most of them marry someone in the 1% anyway so it doesn't matter.
