It's some hardcore bullshite! EVERYONE I know who is willing to talk about money makes six figures

I think 95% of what people tell me they make is bullshite. There's no way that many people our age are making 6 figures when only 8% of the country is doing it. I must know 2% of them.

ETA: I told one of my friends that my position tops out somewhere around $140-160k right now, and his response was "meh, that's not bad for a 30 year old"

People are so full of shite.

You have to remember that your friends are your friends because of your education level.

You don't hang out with idiots. Most of the people I hang out with are 160k+ households before 30 years old. And while that's top 15%, it isn't unbelievable because they are all very well educated folks. There is a bias in my sample, but I also know not to extrapolate that they are lying or that 100k a year is easy.

I sometimes feel like none of us did anything particularly difficult to achieve our incomes. But you know what trips up people? Crap parents, no brains, not turning in simple homework assignments or book reports, going to class, not getting pregnant at 15 etc. That was the "hard" part, putting yourself in a good position by not shooting your foot off.

On a side note: I worked at a Big Lots during some breaks from school. If you want to get to know how the other half lives and thinks, and be fricking terrified afterwards, you should try it

I worked some random jobs growing up and it quickly taught me why I was going to college and doing well once I got there.

Manual labor made me cringe at the thought of doing that for 40 years and working odds and ends service jobs made me not want to be around those kind of coworkers for 40 years.

Well the thing is, I grew up doing construction and maintenance work. Most of my friends have high school educations. They aren't idiots by any means, but some do have the oil field trash mentality.

I think of it this way. If 8% make that much, then if 100 people are in a room, 8 of them make 100k. I would likely gravitate toward the more educated group in the room and have no trouble thinking I could be in that top 8 and wpuld socialize more with them.

yeah I'm two years out of LSU (Civil Engineering) and I cant help but be jealous when I talk to my friends who are making 80k-130k. Especially knowing I had to bust arse for 5 years in college while they were getting hammered 5 nights a week

I just hope I can catch up to them one day

They're not being truthful. And if they are, they are having to work 3000 hours a year to get there. I have friends that make 80k-90k, but their hourly wage is like $22/hr. all they say is "I make 90k".

the majority of my friends are under 100k. The only people I know that make over 100k work in IT, legal or banking.

My wife is in a woman's group, and I bet that everyone in that group but one make under 75k. I also know that almost all of them have masters or higher.

That's not always the case but probably more common than not

Hell my friend that went to work as a plumber out of high school then started his own business makes more money than the one that went to med school

and works way less hours

Ya, I put "well educated" but they are all lawyers and doctors, finance.

I wasn't trying to get too specific with all the exceptions to making 30k a year with a masters. Wasn't really the point of the post.

Mostly that sample bias can warp your impressions on how likely an outcome is in society.

You said it. Unloading a semi truck of inventory during summer has a way of making you not screw around.

It was enlightening to listen to my coworkers complain about negative things in their life yet claim they had no idea why it kept happening to them. All the while I could point out about 5 bad decisions in their stories that directly caused their problem.

One of my favorite events though was having a not so bright coworker just stop while we were working and say, "Man, you are smart you need to be careful, smart people go crazy." he was very concerned.

I think people who talks about how much they make without anyone asking is pretty insecure. Even if they make what they claim, why are they telling you this? Because it's the only way to get validation as person and to gain status. It gets old and boring.

I think it would be more important if people talk about how to achieve freedom and time along with money. And wealth comes in a lot of different forms besides money. Are you wealthy with:
1. your health? What good is money if your health is shite?
2. your mental state? Are you free of stress?
3. your relationship?
4. your hobbies?

Yea, I honestly have no idea how much money any of my friends make. We never really talk about it. I'm sure I could make guesses based on their job and industry, but I don't really care that much.

The only friends we have that try to boast about money just bought a house in the old neighborhood where they grew up because they couldn't get a loan for a house in the same neighborhood as the rest of our group...but to be fair, the home value in our neighborhood has increased over 30% in the last 2 years.

Like I said earlier, it's pretty common with the young "hand" type of guys. They love bragging about how much they make.

I've talked about it with a couple people because it came up in conversation or they are asking career advice and are looking to understand salary potentials. I won't actively bring it up but I also am willing to speak about it if someone asks directly. I personally do not find it to be as 'taboo' as some people make it. I also do not care if a person makes $30K or $300K as long as they are happy and enjoying life. These conversations typically stem from someone asking my advice on something that deal with personal finances.

The one exception is I prefer not to talk about personal finances with friends in financial services...I really don't need them pressuring me to invest with them.

Maintenance hands, crane hands, contract hands, etc

And young operators. Young operators LOVE bragging about how much they make and how little they think they work. They were way too smart to go to college and work that hard, they're making more than me with half the effort.

It's very frustrating to listen to.
