So you in all total, grocery shopping and eating out, spend $2200 per month?? Dat's a lot!

Let me break this down for you - if you're a couple, eating just 2 meals per day, it is costing you $18.25 per meal, per person. If you're eating 3 meals per day, it's a somewhat more reasonable $12.16 per meal.

I think if you found the right business with the right attitude, you could actually have catering for the 2 of you - you wouldn't need a kitchen, pots, pans, go to the grocery store, ever eat out - just have a professional catering contract.

It wound take multiple $100+ meals to make those numbers remotely feasible.

My food budget is $600 for myself but I eat out for every lunch and maybe a third of my dinners. Even if I include my dating budget, then it’s not going above $1000 in a month. $2200 just seems like a big stretch even for someone not watching money closely.

Agree that $2200 is nuts, unless you’re seriously wasteful, buying all kinds of overpriced premade stuff from a place like Whole Foods.....seriously people, learn to cook. You can retire a decade sooner if you get your food budget under control.

we can do some months on like 600 total if we really crack down. but kinda defeats the point of living here if you dont enjoy the two nice parts of it.

I like reading the Money board and have respect for the posters and information here. I'm not going to come here and troll anyone. I was just adding my information. You can process the information as you wish.

We busted our butts for years and are in a financial situation where it doesn't cause us impact. I agree, I wish we didn't spend this much, and yes I wish I would wake up one morning and my wife had become Giada De Laurentiis.

Everyone has their thing where they spend more than they should. This happens to be ours.

I can respect that...Food can be as much an Entertainment budget as it is about nutrition.

If you are duel income no kids making a few hundred thousand, then what you describe is a drop in the bucket. It won’t make you any friends on the MTB but it’s foreseeable to have the disposable income where that kind of food spend isn’t a big deal.

I agree. We enjoy eating certain foods that are expensive. Every other aspect of our finances are in decent shape. Mid 30’s, never had student loans, pay cash for both vehicles, 529’s funded, 401K maxed out each year, etc. This area of our budget isn’t hurting us financially, I just feel like we could be more efficient. Not sure it is worth trying to cut back on considering we enjoy the time together cooking and the food we eat.

I have been reviewing a few months of expenses and surprised at how much we are spending on food. Family of 4, rarely eat out, and we are at $1,300/month
Without eating out, I'm not sure how you spend this much.

That's $43 per day.

I assume you or the wife are cooking up some nice, full meals on a daily basis?

Yeah we generally eat 3 meals a day at home with afternoon snack. Kids are homeschooled so they eat each meal at home as well.

I do all of my budgeting on a weekly basis for consumable stuff like groceries and eating out

I've gotten it to as low as 25 dollars a week for just myself if I don't eat out

I typically spend about 40 a week on groceries and about 30-50 a week on dining out

I used to spend over 200 a week dining out because I'd go out for lunch all the time
