Obviously not for religious reasons, but my wife and I have "gift non-exchange" agreement in place with almost everyone important in our lives. I couldn't stand the waste of time, money and energy that was going annually into exchanging trinkets across long distances.
Us too. I only buy presents for people who get upset if you don't buy them (i.e. my father). Everyone else gets a donation in their honor, although if I see something that screams to me I get you something.
Exception are kids in the family. They get $100 for xmas, $50 for bday and $50 for back to school.

We try to refrain from name calling on Money Talk. Stick to the OT. I said I know it is not for everyone, but it works for me.

We try to limit all gift giving to consumables or cash as well.

I have seen alot of church groups do amazing things with the money they are given and at a much more cost effective manner than any BS gov. program.
Look into what the Catholic Charities does around N.O.

So how do you folks who religously donate 10% or more of your hard earned money at the church feel about the leaders of your church setting up foundations or other shelters to prevent having to pay taxes. And have you ever wondered if they follow their own message of tithing? I know in the church I grew up in the Paster (So Baptist) said he didn't have an income so he didn't have to tithe, all of his money went into his families bank account and his wife was responsible for that money.
Or better yet, how do you folks feel about giving 10% or more of your hard earned money to a church organization who allows pedophiles to screw up young peoples lives in multiple locations and then shelters the perverts by moving them around?
Someone recently said on Fox News that being a leader in a church is as lucrative as being a Wall Street Banker....and no one bothers to even attempt to regulate the church leader.

Why do you give money to the government? You know they are going to waste 90% of it.
I get your point, but it is pointless to argue. I have my own beliefs and convections just as you have yours. You're not going to change my mind on a message board.

Yeah, cause all churches and all church leaders are like this.

When I was growing up in the 50s, my parents were very poor. Dad was a roughneck and mom stayed at at home with me and Bro in a tiny house with no A.C. No A.C. in New Iberia is serious heat and humidity.
But they always made us save a quarter, ie, 25 cents, to put in the 'poor box' at church.
In retrospect they were trying to convince us that we were not poor.
Having grown up poor I know what it's like and I have no sympathy for them. In America it's so easy to not be one of them you actually have to try to be poor. The poor can go to hell. Harsh? Perhaps.

We are getting way off the original post but I agree with you on this.
I was lucky enough to be born with a family that already had money. My dad and grandparents hard work gave me opportunities that most people don't get.
I will say this though. One of the best (and most humbling) moments in my life was Christmas Day four years ago when I bought a bicycle for a six year old who didn't own a thing. You would have thought he won the lottery. Try it this year and I promise you will see what I am talking about.
I guess what I am getting at is while 90% of the people who are poor are lazy. It feels really good to help the other 10%.

I have been poor and I I've been rich, I prefer rich.
I agree with Zach on his whole post.
My mom always made me put some of the money I earned on the farm in the collection plate on sunday. The priest was stealing it to buy crack cocaine. I don't tithe any more.

Don't lie, you've never been rich. Am I right or am I Wright?
