About $1.75 in change in my car. Not kidding.

It me.
I go months without touching cash, Yes, I’ll get some cash out of the ATM if a Hurricane is in the Gulf, or if I’m headed to the farmers market to buy from the one crotchety vendor who still deals only in cash. But otherwise, everything from vending machines to gas to snowballs to haircut to food is paid via electronic transaction or credit card.

Less than $100. If something happens to the banks and the CC systems, then we've all got way bigger problems than having cash.
Several times during approaching hurricanes the networks that process credit and debit cards became overloaded, and slowed to a crawl. Couldnt pump gas, or buy anything with plastic without waiting forever for it to process. If you had cash you were good, just get your stuff and go. It doesn’t take some catastrophic systems failure to make having cash a great thing.

Same. I went to a local bank (not usaa) and completed a counter debit withdrawal for cash to buy my boat.
How much do banks charge for this?
I know casinos can process large cash transactions like this but the fees are notoriously expensive and depending on the location, lines can be long as this is a counter transaction instead of a ATM transaction. Some casino ATM fees are just as high; lowest I have seen was 4 and some change. The highest was something like 6 dollars. Those do not include your bank’s fees.
Luckily, the local bank I deal with refunds the first 20 dollars in ATM fees per month and does not charge extra for non branch ATM transactions. They also used to be a part of a regional network of banking locations that would not charge a fee to each other’s customers, but I tried at a different bank and discovered this bank was no longer included or my bank dropped out.
My daily ATM limit is 500, so if I need more than that a day I need to quit gambling.

We try not to keep much cash. I always feel like inflation is like moths eating my wool sweaters.

I've always said that I would do the same thing if I won the lottery. I would buy about $1 million in Kruggerands. I would never think of it as an investment but merely an emergency vehicle in the event everything goes to sh!t. If everything does go to sh!t, gold will be the only real currency and that $1 million will be worth tens of millions of dollars. And, I would definitely keep it in a well-hidden, fire and water proof safe in my home.

Why would you need gold coins to be kept in a water and fire proof safe?

Because I'm going to have lots of sh!t in there -- not just Krugerrands.

Whatever I have around to pay my lawn guy.
Gold would be equally useless for a while in a SHTF situation. Straight up bartering would be the standard for awhile until whatever catalyst settles.

I could probably scrounge up a couple hundred plus $30 in change. Cash is worthless if SHTF with society, and I don't ever intend to be in a situation where I need enough to go on the run. I guess all you really need is enough to cash to make it through a few days worth of power outage like after a hurricane.

$0. My wife has it stashed around in various places but I don't know where any of it is.

It really depends on the situation and just how quickly the SHTF. Regardless of how long it takes people to figure it out, the best "currency" for a SHTF situation is bullets.

used to never keep cash. At the start of COVID, i sold my ZTR after moving houses and having a smaller yard. Guy paid with $2200 in 100s. I put it in a decoration jar in our kitchen. Man... i came across more deals that i otherwise wouldve lost out on had i not had that cash. I'm an avid FB marketplace shopper. All that said, i now keep between 1500-2500 cash at the house and about 300 in my wallet

That's why they made Venmo.
Venmo is useless during a power widespread outage. Anyone living in a hurricane prone area absolutely needs cash following a major hurricane.

40k...and at least that many rounds of ammo. You never know when you have to bail someone out of jail....or bust them out of a situation.

Whatever is in my wallet. Maybe like 60 bucks. Probably less.
