Last year when Gold hit $3k I sent an update on it in a family group text. It was going to be the last time I tried to get my family to think about precious metals. I had tried a lot in the years prior and they never listened. Right after I sent it my douchebag BIL started texting back that he's never heard of anyone getting rich from buying Gold. He said it in a condescending manner. I politely informed him that you don't buy Gold to get rich, you buy Gold to stay rich. He then proceeded to tell me that he's never heard of anyone doing that either. He was trying to paint me as an idiot for buying coins. I won't share everything said, but that's the gist of it. I'm also reminded of my brother asking me why I'm still buying this stuff a few years back. I don't know where I'm going with this really, but it's been awesome watching these things run knowing I was right. I know a few of y'all probably have similar stories.
I’m willing to bet almost everyone in this thread has a related experience of some sort. I started telling my friends and family to buy in 2020. Not a single one listened.

I’ve posted on here before. My uncle encouraged my brother and I to buy gold and silver back in 2016. We bought some and he gave us some to help encourage us. I stopped buying. I already dump all my money into various retirement vehicles was my thinking. Boy was I dumb. My uncle has over a million dollars now just in silver monster boxes and about 1.2 million in gold American Eagles that he purchased at a fraction of the price. This doesn’t include all the silver bars he has……

Cheese and Rice.... If that was me, I'd be unloading slowly and taking some gains.

It's always someone's uncle with the metals. Mine gave me some silver and encouraged me to buy more. I got a bit, but not as much as I should have. But he asked me to store his gold/silver at my place for a while (I have a fairly big home with good hiding spots) before he took it back about 2 years ago. It was just a trapper keeper with gold + silver coins. It was worth a good bit when he took it back, but I'd say that it would be a $500k trapper keeper today. He had at least 60oz of gold coins, and more in silver. I should have just taken it and ran off to Mexico.

What is a reasonable top in this? Is $200 a safe assumption now I assume?

There’s no reasonable way to answer that question. We could be at the top right now. The top could be $500. The top could be $1000. We might run to $150 and then have a massive pull back. Any of these things as possible.
I’ll tell you this though, I’m not Selling. I don’t have a ton of conviction as to where the price will be in three months or six months. I do have a lot of conviction that the price will be higher than it currently is in five years.

46.075 GSR.
I actually counted last night and have 7 ounces less of gold than I thought. While I was through buying gold, if it pulls back like the YouTube gurus are saying, I will buy that extra 7 ounces.
Telling family to buy is time wasted. My daughter called me a pirate She did buy one doorstop, but would not buy more. She was originally going to buy 2 Krugs and 2 doorstops. Last minute mind change brought it to 1 doorstop.

All of the "experts" are saying it may go to single digits. If it does, I will trade any silver I may or may not have, for gold. Then, I will wait for it to go back up to 80-100. This swing will probably not happen in my lifetime.
DJT spoke again last week of abolishing the IRS. Every stacker should be praying this happens. The IRS did not pay for any metals and should not feel entitled to any profits that may be had.

Question: How does this get taxed exactly? I guess you could maybe sell in small quantities and not report anything. But if you’re selling larger quantities, how does one figure a basis and a gain?

Depends o the item , depends on the state you file in.
No cap gains on the sale of ASEs ever.
Sale of $10K in precious metals will generally trigger a form 1099-B from the buyer/dealer.
Small value trades remain below the radar, but the tax obligation still exists for the individual. So a doorstop ($10,100.) will trigger automatic 1099-B when sold at a dealer.
A piece of advice …. never store doorstops on your boat …

We're at $113.50 as I type this. Holy smokes this thing is on fire!
Edit: The ratio is now at just over 45. Damn!

Most of my investments is tied up with ASTS, which I believe is at the beginning of an inflection point and COULD see another 300% return over the next 2 years. Trying to decide if I should sell some to buy SLV at these prices.

I know that paper is frowned upon, but does anyone have any silver stock recommendations? I usually just throw my SEP into SPY (it works), but I want to throw some into silver if it's not absolutely retarded. I'm not going to throw a ton of money into it, but may do 90% SPY and 10% silver stuff...

We generally frown upon ETFs that are supposed to contain exposure to physical silver but the custodian is the most crooked company in the world (JPMC) as they have rehypothecated the silver many times over and don't have enough physical to back the fund. If you insist on a paper stock that is backed by physical then Sprott is at least a legitimate custodian who won't issue a share until the physical metal backs it so go with PSLV.
I would also consider going after miners at this point instead of the base metal and I would look into Mining Stock Monkey or one of the many others like Rick Rule who provide insights into their portfolios and analysis (for a fee of course) but you will likely make that back many times over.

Same. Unless China changes its stance or multiple massive lodes are found which easily offsets China's toll-boothing of silver sales, it's likely to be a buy and hold market for a while.
