He’s good but he’s not mike trout. Just plays in a good market on the east coast and has some personality so the hype machine got ahold of him

I certainly wouldn’t mind if the Cubs got him.

Harper is what he is which is a very inconsistent player.
I don't think that can be argued against.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good problem to have, but you don't know if you're getting top 3 hitter in the game or just a pretty good hitter from year to year. That's risky if we're talking about that $400mil contract. How is it not?

Harper is dead last among both groups even though I included his 10 WAR 2015 season. If it was just from the last three seasons, he would be dead last by an even bigger margin.

interesting move of the goal posts.

any other stipulations you want to create here?

I used 2015 as the cutoff point because that's when Bryant, Lindor, and Ramirez all started their Major League careers. How can you even compare the career WAR of Harper to Ramirez, Bryant, and Lindor when he had a three year and 300+ game head start on all of those guys?

Harper is just such an anomaly because he's hitting free agency at his age. Machado is similar.

Otherwise, sluggers are usually under team control at 25.

so you hold it against him because he was better at a younger age then those guys were?

i mean i get it, it fits your narrative. But sheesh man. That's a win for Harper

It's two separate arguments. Harper was better earlier. Has Harper been as good as Lindor over the past few years?

He's not abnormally inconsistent, no, especially given his age. He has been injury prone and played through injuries, which has affected his play at times.

He's a hot streak away from getting into NL MVP race

If you don't want to look at accumulative stats, over the last 4 years since Lindor has been in the MLB

Lindor OPS+ 119
Harper OPS+ 149

I would take Harper over Lindor in a heartbeat and wouldn’t hesitate.

Really? Lindor being an elite defensive SS should be considered as well (not saying you ignored that)

Lindor currently has .370 OBP and on pace for 40 HR, 25 SB, and 100+ RBI with a lot of games batting leadoff. I’m on phone so too lazy to look up more advanced metrics

of course an argument can definitely be made he can’t sustain such numbers over the course of multiple seasons

The problem is you aren't signing Harper to a 2-4 year deal. Whoever signs him will be for a long time and if he doesn't work out it will be devastating to the team for a long time.

So the question really isn't is he as good or bad as those other guys, the question is simply is he worth the kind of money at least 2 or 3 teams are likely to spend on him?

Everyone wants him for 2-3 years, but do you really want him for Max money for 8? Not sure he's convinced me of that this year.

I highly doubt there is a GM in all of baseball who would take harpers future value over Lindor.

you're comparing career WAR among players with significantly differing service times

Harper is in his 7th season and Lindor in his 4th and Harper isn't significantly ahead of him in career WAR so you're making everyone else's points for them

in 8 years he will only be 33. The dude will only get better. As someone else said the reason he will get paid the way he will is he is only 25.

So wait, if the point of the exercise was to compare him to other players his own age(wasn’t my idea), we are going to hold it against that he was good enough to be called up earlier because of how good he was? That’s interesting
