Broaki, I know you’ve been excited about what he can add to the bullpen assuming Fried comes back. (I’m not confident in Wright for this year). And I think you’re right—his stuff would play out of the pen. But I think AA may go get a couple high leverage guys for the pen—we really need another hard-throwing, high leverage lefty. Anyway, point is, I’m not sure AJ doesn’t stick in the rotation. Might be a battle between him and Shuster for that 5th spot.
I really am fascinated how we approach the pen on the back half of the season. There's really so many different ways we can attack it. Do Allard or Soroka factor in? That's like the only thing we really need to address outside of upgrading the empty uniform that is Sam Hilliard – but that's not pressing at all.
I think it's all but certain that AJSS moves to the pen once Fried comes back. Shuster is way more of a complete pitcher than him, but AJSS has better stuff which plays much better in an inning or 2 as opposed to 5+.
Looking way ahead though for the NLDS when we likely go three-man rotation, it'll be interesting to see who stays in between Elder and Strider because Fried and Morton are locked in, assuming Max is healthy and Charlie doesn't completely tank.

Yeah I've heard the same. No way in hell do you trade AJSS.
Or how about Jim Bowden saying that he'd trade TDA for a mid-rotation starter?
there's a reason he isn't a GM anymore. Holy shite what a bad trade idea.

I've heard some of the guys on 680 (Chernoff, specifically) say they'd trade AJSS to get a mid rotation starter like Bieber at the deadline this season. What a retarded take. That kid has insane talent.
Why do people think we need a mid-rotation guy?
Starting pitching is the least of our worries.

Speaking of playoffs, I hope we have Vaughn on the postseason roster (assuming we don't trade him). That's a good bat to have off the bench.

What would it take to get Chapman from the Royals?
Vaughn, Shuster, and what else?

Shuster, especially for a wishy washy arse closer, is off the table for me. With Fried's uncertain future, we need to hold onto a LHP starter that still has some upside.
Also, this fricking kid is a cheat code.

FYI, Soroka pitching great again. Threw a seven inning one hitter last start.

I know they’re an exciting team and all and they all count, but both their homers have barely gotten out of this tiny ballpark.
Yes they count I know.
Curious how many parks they’d have been homers in.

I haven't been too impressed with Shusters stuff. Think he would be an okay 4th arm but he is young and could develop into more I guess.
Got to strike while the iron is hot and like you said our only hole is bullpen depth. We are lacking power arms especially.

Me too.

You’d think so, but where? And when?

I think all that is right—AJ has better stuff and a higher ceiling, but is having to learn how to pitch on the fly. Shuster is much more polished, but with lesser stuff. He may stay in the rotation through the regular season, but see a very diminished role in the postseason with less starters.

I agree it will be interesting. but I think Elder may be the only “guarantee.” Strider still scares me—not convinced he’s 100%. Not completely confident Fried is Fried when he comes back. And Charlie can tank down the stretch. Not saying all those will happen, but it’s a long way to go still. We’ll see.

He has a great pitch mix.

You don't trade a young controllable lefty starter for fricking Aroldis Chapman.

Ronnie needs to finish this season off and close out his 1st MVP. Needs to win it again next year too. Cause De La Cruz is about to go on a steak of consecutive ones before too long. I’ve never see someone so fast, so powerful, so young, with that frame. He’s 6’5” and can put on another 25 pounds easily and not lose anything. He’s gonna be a force. I can’t even think of a good comp. Young ARod, maybe?

Injury-management with that frame will be the biggest thing that stands in his way, same for O'neil Cruz.
