By his third season, Green led the Chiefs to a 13–3 record in 2003 and was called the "mastermind of the Chiefs' high-powered offense."[38] Even after leading the franchise to its first postseason appearance in six seasons, Chiefs fans had still not figured out whether they loved him or hated him.[38] In 2004, Green threw for 4,591 yards and a league-high 556 passing attempts.[41] Green was selected to two Pro Bowl games in 2003 and 2005.[24][41] Green's 81-game start streak for the Chiefs from 2001–2006 is a franchise record at the position.[42] His 88 career starts for the Chiefs is second behind Dawson.[24] Green is the Chiefs' career leader in passer rating (87.3),[43] average gain per attempt (7.7),[41][42] 300-yard passing games (24),[43] completion percentage (61.94),[43] and completions of 20 or more yards (274).[42][43] He is the only quarterback in Chiefs history to throw a "perfect game" registering a 158.3 passer rating against Detroit on December 14, 2003.[43]
Green was pretty damn good

From 2000 to 2006, Gonzalez was the most productive tight end in the NFL. During this time he averaged 79 receptions, 968 yards, and 6.5 touchdowns per season and was elected to the Pro Bowl every year. His best season statistically came in 2004, when he caught an NFL record (for a tight end) 102 passes for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns. Gonzalez's single-season record of 102 receptions by a tight end stood for 8 years, until it was broken by Jason Witten during the 2012 season.[6]

You need to account for era.
Rules in the passing game are different now from when Rice was in his prime.
This is also why guys like Welker get overrated by fans.

Well, Welker just isn't that good...the system makes him appear good
I'm going nowhere near him in fantasy football this season

Yeah I don't know about the Green Vs Ryan argument but the chiefs offense at that time wasn't something that Gonzales had to overcome... by any stretch.

Pretty sure he is the best TE of all time, but I don't see him being the best player of all time.

Catching passes is one dimension of being a TE.
Next thing you know, Falcons fans will say Michael Vick is the greatest QB ever because he ran for the most yards.

Trent Green was a lot like Josh Freeman last year, he was good in spurts but overall meh..... Granted for the way the rules were at the time he was better but that 13-3 Chiefs team led the league with 32 rushing touchdown (next was Eagles at 23) as Holmes had 27 rushing touchdowns on 1400 yards, he was also leading reciever with 74 catches (Gonzales 71, Kennison 56, Morton 50, and Dante Hall 40)
Trent Green had his best season on a 7-9 Chiefs squad where he completed 66% for 4591 yards 27TD and 17INT.

I think comparing a player's stats to the average or typical player at his position is a good metric for argument, and I certainly appreciate your argument for Gonzales as "best".
Football, however, is not as tactically homogenous as other sports, so it would be quite a stretch to declare Gonzales the most impactful or most valuable or greatest. That would be akin to equating pawns to queens on chess boards.

Tony Gonzalez is the best tight end to ever play football. Period. Its not up for discussion. But you can't name a best player of all time. Too many all time greats. The discussion would go on and on and on

Lol you can't just say he isn't the best TE and not list who is

This is actually a Lebron-MJ thread. You guys just don't know it yet.

Smart move Peyton Manning never throws to his slot receiver.
