Tidwell just got there, and given the new manager (whose conversations about Tidwell eventually paved the way for this job), him and Kilen are probably some degree of untouchable.

If they don’t plan on re-signing him, of course it is the most logical business decision to do.
If he want's to try to get shortstop money and wants to try that market - and just wants to go somewhere else - yes. I think he wants to be a Cub though. He already went team friendly once Re; years.

And they are well past the point of negotiating a reasonable contract for him.
I guess that depends on what you consider reasonable. That's very relative.

Well, you mention Marcus Simien (7/175) and I think more reasonable would be Tommy Edman (5/75). If the latter, sign me up. If the former, buh bye.

Who are they going to give up for him? I would think it would have to be a combo top prospect and solid major leaguer at the very minimum to even get the Cubs to the table. Not sure how their farm rates and what solid player at the MLB level they'd have and be willing to part with that would make it so?

Well, he has had a higher WAR than Simien the last two years - and while it's not the be all and end all of stats - I do think it useful in comparing players at the same position - for obvious reasons.
But there will be a new CBA and a higher first level in 2027 almost certainly, which is VERY important for the Cubs because after Covid, the Ricketts have made that first line a do not pass zone. Cubs will likely offer similar are slightly higer AAV and fewer years, maybe with opt outs.
I'm kinda in the it ain't my money and the Ricketts have enough so what if you have to pay a little penalty.

In a vacuum I'd agree - it's for sure an overpay.
But for what the Cubs need to get better I actually think it's a good move.
He gives more certainty at 3b than Shaw but allows Shaw to develop and still get at bats as a super utility guy so that if Nico leaves after this year he could be the heir apparent at second.
The Cubs think he will age well, much like Zobrist who they signed to a 4-year deal at the age of 34. He won't be peak 2019 Bregman but if he gives what he did last year when healthy it's a significant upgrade (and outside of last year he's largely played around 150 are more games) and lengthens the line up. By all accounts he's great in the clubhouse and great mentor to younger players.
And the money is only an issue if the Ricketts allow it to be. There's a definite window for the Cubs to compete for significant stakes in 2026 and Bregman can absolutely be part of that.
