There's still time for Fowler to get injured before opening day. Write his name lightly in pencil.

Nope.

So no one else thinks Ross catches Lester on opening day?

How do you guys think Alcantara figures in to the lineup?

A few insiders are saying he's a shoe in for opening day

Alcantara will play a super utility role more than likely. Wouldn't be surprised if he got a lot of time at 3B if Bryant doesn't start in the show.

It's a lot more likely that he will be on the Opening Day roster than it is that he would be hitting the 2 hole.

He will see some, but more than likely that Olt is going to see the lion's share of the playing time at 3rd base until April 17 (if Bryant isn't there on April 5).

Just making his first spring training start on Saturday. Not 100% that he will be ready for Opening Day.

This is Joe Maddon we're talking about.

I don't want to sit here like a knowitall doucherocket and say I know Bryant won't be on the Opening Day roster. But I feel like the Cubs would be very foolish to sacrifice a year of team control of your best (and MLB's best) prospect for what, two weeks worth of games? It just doesn't make much sense other than to pacify meatballery.

I don't think it would be foolish but I will say it would be the smarter, more business savvy thing to do to send him down. But as a fan, I just think if he stays up, mashes, and earns his money a little sooner, let him. At the end of the day, it's not my money.

Bryant's not even going to make it to that 7th year or whatever it is on his current contract. If he's legit, he will get paid way before that and his super 2 status is irrelevant. If he isnt legit, then who cares?

Also, they brought in Maddon to win now. They backed the Brinks truck up to Lester's door to win now. Sure, two weeks is two weeks, but those are the games you look back at in September when the division or WC is within reach.

As for Mike Olt manning 3B in the interim if Bryant isn't up, let's not forget he K'd in 40% of his ABs last season. Baez is K'ing 40+% of his ABs. Not sure we can have both of them getting unproductive outs that often. May as well start getting Mendy's feet wet all over the diamond ASAP

I thought this way a few weeks ago too, but Boras is infamous for taking all of his big name clients to free agency to maximize return. Ricketts could offer Bryant ownership of the franchise and Boras would still take him to free agency to see if he could get more. So, it makes sense for the Cubs to have him under control for as long as possible, and they're much more likely to be in playoff contention in 2021 than in 2015 the way things are shaping up right now.

Not to be a dick but, who? Because I've seen no one related to the cubs say anything even hinting at that.

It's not a money issue. It's a control issue. Boras' clients generally do not sign extensions. So for 10 games you're gambling with a year. Nothing about this management has ever led me to think they'd do some, thing that silly. In fact they've generated plenty of reasons why he shouldn't start the season in the majors just to cut the mlbpa off at the pass.

To gyno: The Lester signing was not a win now in the sense you're trying to use it to justify bryant starting the season with the cubs. The FO said repeatedly that you sign talent when it's available. Jed, on the few times he's allowed to talk, said hey wanted to add 2 front end pitchers over the next 24 months (said this in November) so clearly Lester then price/ceuto/Zimmerman/porcello this off season.
