Heard Bill Franques talking about this on radio yesterday.
Why would the 1980 game have been tape delayed? It was in New York.

AI says:
The 1980 "Miracle on Ice" hockey game was tape-delayed because ABC, which held the U.S. broadcasting rights, wanted to air the match during primetime (8 p.m. EST) for a larger audience. The game actually started at 5 p.m. EST, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) refused to reschedule it to a later time.
Key details regarding the tape delay:
Failed Negotiation: ABC tried to move the game to 8 p.m. and offered to pay the IIHF $125,000, but the Soviet Union rejected the time change.
Soviet Timing: Moving the game to 8 p.m. EST would have placed the start at 4 a.m. in Moscow, which the Soviets found unacceptable.
Primetime Strategy: ABC chose to tape the 5 p.m. game and air it later that evening to maximize viewership.
No Spoiler Policy: Despite the delay, many Americans did not know the result, and broadcaster ABC was praised for not spoiling the outcome during their coverage

HA! they forgot to prep their local affiliates in that regard - Andy Leopold of Ch. 2 did not get the memo. He defended his decision but it was indefensible.

I watched it. I was driving to my in-laws house while the game was being played. I didn’t want to hear what happened since I was going to watch it on tape delay after I got there.

We didn't know any better, it's all we had. Wouldn't trade it for anything though, it was a great memory and something that brings me back to that night 46 years ago. Times were simpler back then, what a time to be alive. We had no idea how great the 80s would be at that time.
