I'm certain the feelings are mutual b/w JV and the team
I think there's legs to that rumor about throwing out the first pitch

It's very weird. I don't know why you burn that bridge and why you don't want his pressence in the organization even if he can't suit up.

What about taking a flyer on Kikuchi for relatively cheap?
We've seen him be elite against us multiple times but obviously we've ripped him a new a-hole multiple times as well. Seems like if someone could figure out his problems with consistency then he'd potentially be an asset
Doesn't help we don't know who our pitching coach is though

Pitching coach is gonna be one of the assistants, Murphy or Miller. Kikuchi has great stuff, I would like to shoot higher though

Yeah I def wouldn't want him being our only or best pitching acquisition. Just thought if we did something like Rodon and Kikuchi on 2-3 year deals that may be something

Seems very telling to me that the CWS didn't extend a QO. It's almost like they were afraid he'd take it. He definitely fell off during the year. I think if you go 2 on Rodon, it's got to be on the cheap.

I agree but we're likely going to have to take a risk on some pitcher regardless what it is

That doesn't scare me given the injury and little he was able to pitch between 2019 and 2020.
I would be more worried about an underlying injury.

Ryno has been cheerleading that for 2 months now. I don’t know how y’all let that numbnuts influence some of the DAT posters. He needs a change to his character one of these days.

Underestimate Pena at your own risk. He will be a star.

I could be wrong, but here's how I see the offseason playing out:
Market is probably going to be slow because of the CBA and probable lockout.
Astros aren't going to make any major free agent moves unless it's a Brantley type where the years aren't more than 2 or 3 years. If they acquire a No. 1 starter or a big-time position player in the offseason, it would be in a trade for a guy who might make a lot of money, but only has 1 or 2 years left on the deal.
Otherwise, they're gonna let the pitching (minor bullpen help in the market) and shortstop (Pena or Aledmys) ride with status quo until next July. And if there's a need, they'll be strategic about it and trying to find a 1 who is a rental or has 1 or 2 years left on his deal after that.
The owner will spend money. We've bumped against the luxury tax or gone over it in the last 2 or 3 years. I don't think they mind spending money in a given year. They don't want an albatross of a bad long-term contract eating up the flexibility. We have brought starting pitchers with big names and reputations through here (Verlander, Cole, Greinke) and paid them a decent amount of money (although I think the Tigers and D'Backs paid part of the Verlander and Greinke salaries). But each one was in a trade, and in each case, the Astros' initial commitment wasn't more than 2 years. They extended Verlander but even that was only for 2 years.
They will spend money, but they're strategic about it. As long as they keep spending money and have some left over each July to make the necessary in-season moves, I can appreciate the philosophy.

Reds are apparently looking to cut payroll. Castillo is the sexy target but I’m not sure we have what it takes to get that done (or we would want to with how thin our system is). I wonder if Sonny Gray makes sense though, very reasonable contract through 2023, he slipped a bit last year but still only 32 and has been very good in the past. Maybe not the highest upside guy but would slot above Framber and Garcia if he can get back to the 2019-20 form.
A’s have several pitchers that could be interesting via trade as well and know they love our prospect leftovers

Bassitt/Chapman package. Make it happen.
Bassitt only has one more arbitration year before UFA.
Chapman has two more arbitration years before UFA.
Both are going to make a good chunk in arbitration, so that's the sort of payroll Oakland might want to shed, but it's also not break the bank payroll for the Astros and it's short term.
And bring back Tony Kemp while you're at it.

Sonny Gray makes a LOT of sense. Very reasonable contract ($10.17M) for 2022 with a $12M team option for 2023.
Might also kick the tires on Kyle Farmer... can play SS until Pena is ready and also fill in at the other IF positions. He's nothing more than a UT guy long term, though unless he has a power breakthrough.

I don't see any major trades. Not enough depth in the system. Unless you find a taker for bregman or Brantley I just don't see it.
Posted on 11/10/21 at 12:28 pm to Tiger Ryno
Oh, I think you could get a taker on Bregman, but he has that face of the franchise thing in Houston, and with Correa not coming back, they're not gonna lose 2 out of 3 in the same year
Besides that, I believe in Bregman, and he had to have been legitimately playing hurt. With that being said, he's not playing everyday SS
