I think that Clay Travis has always had it right when it comes to the NBA- the way to kill the super team is to allow each team one player that does not count against the cap. Those players are greedy; they will not want to be second fiddle anywhere when on a reduced salary when they can be the king somewhere that can offer them a blank check.

Hopefully the NBA can at least remain on tv in the future. I don't watch it but I've seen posters say on here they do.

A less boring one.

this. stupid to have a cap at all if it's not a hard cap.

Its also so high anyways that financial incentives to deals become less important.

In the NFL making another 5 million dollars a year for a top player could be a 50+% increase in salary.

In the NBA its a number more comparable to differentiation in state taxes at the top end.

Making 50 or 45 million dollars doesn't move the needle as much and chasing titles is infinitely more attractive than say someone looking at 4 or 9 million dollars in the NFL.

The NBA pays so much the whole financial angles of a cap in the first place are out of whack.

The only fix would only let like one person per team make the super star pay. Then it drops extremely far down and you can have so many there. And drop down and so many there. Or you can have no super star but lots of star paid players, etc.

Without any way to spread any talent around most of the NBA is trash

If they shortened the regular season it would make every game mean that much more.

Then do best of 3 in the first series and best of 5 second series. Then you could actually have upsets. But they won’t do this because they make so much more money from tv contracts.

disagree. I think it helps the NBA to create more lore around super stars if there’s a wide disparity between them and the bottom half of players.

The 90s had a ton of superstars on a ton of teams not named the Chicago Bulls.

Someone explain to me how the NBA is a worse product if we eliminated

Orlando
Atlanta
Charlotte
Phoenix
LA Clippers
Toronto
Milwaukee
Oklahoma City
New Orleans
Utah

right now. Just - poof - and those teams all cease to exist. Their players are drafted by the remaining 20 teams in reverse order of finish with the freedom to cut any one player in exchange for a new draftee until all teams finish being constructed. Coaches and GMs all become free agents.

I'm not sure I'm picking up what you're putting down.

I like how teams in some of the biggest and fastest growing metropolitan areas lose their teams but Memphis, San Antonio and Cleveland survive and carry on

I'm not necessarily agreeing with the proposal, but the supermax has failed.

Unless the team offering a supermax already has 1 or 2 allstar caliber players on rookie deals, the player taking the supermax just fricks their team even more.

Bron is like the only player (In modern times ) that you could give a full supermax to and still be a finals contender. He's that good. Most of the other supermax eligible players aren't even close.

Take them and Indiana too. Make it 16. Top 2 teams from East and West make the Playoffs.

Let's just watch the lake show scrimmage all year long. That's the only team that's relevant

The NFL has a legit hard salary cap.
