Redick just asked for it. The poetry thing was just too good to be true. It was like he walked up to the Maryland student section and said "please make fun of me." He was also ridiculously overrated. The guy simply couldn't create his own shot, so I hated hearing announcers fawn over the guy. He was a pretty one-dimensional player. Like Charles Barkley would say, he's real good at hitting the shot once he comes off that moving screen.
I love Paulus. Because he is a turnover machine and makes Duke worse. I hope he has more eligibility.
Coach K also gets in these rather unfortunate father-son like relationships with his point guards. It just begs to be mocked. The way he used to talk about Wojo I thought we had to worry about a priest-choir boy scenario.

Apparently Ward never made the McDonald's team. This is a pretty entertaining site to look for some names in the past McDonald's All-American Archive
As for Redick, the hatred began long before the poetry stuff was covered by the press, but it definitely made him an even larger target.

I think Paulus is one of those guys that falls into the "pre-ordained" heroes that folks enjoy seeing fail. Sorta like another guy with an eerily similar last name...the Beano Cook creation: Ron Powlus. Had Damon Bailey played at Duke, it probably would have been the same for him.
Redick is one of my favorites, and while it is true that he wasnt much of a creator, he hit more than his fair share of Js with defenses up on him. It doesnt make one an NBA player, but very few in college could/have done it as well. All that said, yes he was an easy target, being the best player for Duke as a smaller energy guy for more than a year seems to cause it.

Honestly, Paulus should have stuck with football.
I would have done exactly what he did. Coach K pretty much said come here and you will start as a fresh. Not many guys do this at Duke. Greg knew he wasnt going anywhere after college. Not the NFL, not the NBA. Why not stick to what you love most and get a great education as well.

Yeah, he has definitely been a very good student in his 4 years at Duke. Unlike McRoberts, he really took his academics seriously from day one which shows that he is a mature guy.
However, he probably thought he would have an NBA career after his 4 years at Duke. He's obviously not the kind of explosive player that scouts love (Iverson, Rose, etc.), but he was still a McDonald's All-American and the Gatorade High School Football Player of the Year.
Just take a look at this. Rivals 2005 Basketball 150

It's just funny that MOST of the reasons you listed for hating Duke has nothing to actually do with Duke, and it has more to do with the media.
Over exposure-check
ESPN Constantly hyping up-check
head coach who we are constantly told how he does things "the right way"-check
Neither was the obnoxious fanbase-Wait, aren't you a Maryland fan?

Yeah, the poetry was in response to how tough it was to play on the road in the ACC. Redick publicly complained about how mean the crowds were and how that shoudn't be allowed. Which coming from a Duke player, is the height of unintentional irony.
I think that's one of Duke's worst attributes: being able to dish it out but not take it. They brag about their student section and how it effectively mocks opponents but they whine whenever another team makes fun of them. You can't have it both ways.

Admittedly, I grew up a rabid Duke fan, but since I've moved on to college I've become more of a general fan of good basketball. For example, I love watching UNC play now, even more than Duke, and I really dislike Paulus because of his excessive flopping.
That said, I agree wholeheartedly about not being able to take it. Redick had his own ESPN segments complaining about the road crowds and touting his poetry, but then he would hit a 3 and turn and give the crowd the 'shocker' sign.
It's things like that that pulled the Duke Blue glasses from my eyes and helped me see that douches come in all uniform shades.

it's not really that they're white, it's that they are kiss arse white players who rush over to be the first person to listen attentively to coach K during timeouts, slap the floor and have team huddles after every free throw, seemingly to overcome their personal inadequacies of not being as athletic as they should be for playing DI basketball. Duke thrives on teacher's pets and it's sickening.
i don't hate Paddy Mills, didn't hate Jeff Sheppard (UK), or Gugliotta or Bobby Sura.
but for some reason, Paulus and Wojo make me wanna beat the shite out of something.

Those are all very good qualities in players, and there are many non-white players who act just like this but get nowhere near the hatred Duke's players get.

So why does this make them hateable? Being less athletic is now a hated quality? And define athletic? I'd say someone like Singler, who is 6'8 and can play just about anywhere on the floor , or Paulus, who is very quick and was an All American QB, are both athletic.

Just making my point for me.

excessive flopping
Honestly, this is a huge part of my hatred of Duke. It happens with too many players for it not to be something Coach K actually teaches. And it's just a scourge on college basketball. It's terrible defense, it's bad tactics, and its actually a disservice to the players who will never step up their game defensively if they keep up the act.
Other teams flop, but nowhere is it an epidimic like at Duke. Shane Battier was the worst offender, which is why he's probably my least favorite Dookie ever (also, it was fun making fun of his wrinkly head). Flopping is awful basketball. I used to hate the Four Corners offense as a way to slowly murder the pace of a basketball game, but this offense is far worse.
