Why did they agree to pay him $1.2 million for 25 years and not just pay out the remaining $5.9 million plus interest in 5 years.
Because at the time the Wilpon family was investing a crazy amount of money with a family friend that had a return bigger than these payouts so they were coming out ahead even making these yearly payments.
That friend of course was Bernie Madoff.

MLB teams are still dishing out payments to at least 13 now-retired big leaguers, according to Spotrac data.
That number will go up in the future because one of the ways the Dodgers built their payroll in recent years used a lot of deferred money in contracts. Freedie Freeman's contract for example:
quote:
Freeman will make $27 million a year with Los Angeles, but $7 million is deferred in each of the first three seasons and $12 million in each of the last three for a total of $57 million. That money is payable in installments of $4 million each July 1 from 2028-35, and $5 million each July 1 from 2036-40

It blows my mind that and GM and owner would be dumb enough to agree to this. And Saberhagen and Castilla haven't played for ages. How are they still getting paid?

With $5.6 million in retained salary and $9.2 million in deferred compensation, Davis will earn more than any player currently on the Orioles roster. He will also receive roughly another $56 million through 2037.

As I get older, it feels like I see this thread every three months
This hit me hard. True story.
Although the Madoff tie in plus the hilarious term of the agreement makes this one of those stories that actually gets better each year. Plus we only visit it once annually. Aging like fine wine.

$1 in 2000 is worth $1.77 now. Mets lost this deal.

I thought the Dodgers were already over the luxury tax anyway? They should have just paid him without deferring so much.
