I'd start with something like the Rapsodo MLM 2 Pro. It'll cost you under a grand all in and has most of the functionality that you'd need. Spin rates, launch angles etc. has like 30,000 courses. You just need to get a quality net, an ipad, computer or something like that to link it to and the other accessories.
If he keeps at it, then consider one of the more robust and expensive systems.

My brother has one. Probably has like $5k in it.
That's about the price point I've heard...imo it's cheaper & more convenient than constantly driving 15-30 minutes to the course. You can play at night too, so short winter days aren't an issue.
They're great for entertainment too - have the boys over and sip some bourbon (or some root beer in your son's case).
Considering some baws on here are dropping 80-100k on a pool it seems cheap

Bushnell Launch Pro
That's what I have, but I bought the one that also has club data. Then I got a good mat and a net return, and a tripod for my ipad and was in business in 15 minutes. I don't use it as much as I thought I would, but it's nice to have. I mainly use it for driving range and don't do much simulation.
To the poster that suggested that you could start hitting it fat, that is true. The fix is to put a piece of masking tape on the mat just behind your ball.

I'm into mine for just under 3k. Have had it up and running for almost 2 years now. It gets used 3-5x a week this time of year. It also gets used to watch live sporting events other times of the year. I would say I was hesitant at first but now it's turned into something me and the kids will spend at least a few hours a week using.
Spend good money on the hitting strip and you won't develop bad habits. To me, the more swings the better. You won't walk out of there a scratch golfer but your ball striking will improve a lot.

If you’re going to do it, do it right. When I built my house, I designated a 16x 22 room for one and make my own buildout. I use it every day even if it’s just for 15 minutes. But I’ve got 2 TVs in there on top of the screen and a monitor.
I use GSpro and Simulator Golf Tour where we play the same course as the PGA Tour each week. It’s a blast and I highly recommend it. I recommend at least a Bushnell Launch Pro or a GC3 along with a good gaming computer, mat, projector and screen. I’d be looking to spend at least 7-10k. If you do that, you will use it. If you get some shite like a Mevo, you won’t, because the data will suck and it will miss pitch shots.
All this to play at Beau Chene

Your parents told you that you couldn't use their basement for the golf simulator, huh?

We have the Square in the garage. Total build less than $2k. Have to wait until about 8pm to use it, due to being so mf'ing hot, but we wear that thing out. About once/week, get a rain day and will cool off the garage a bit.
Courses are more video game than actual golf, but would highly recommend.

As a dad with 2 under 4, I think my setup is worth it. I really only get on the course 3-4 times a month right now, but I can go hit balls in the garage after the kids are in bed.
I got a used trackman from my home club when they upgraded. I already owned a PC that was strong enough to run any of the sim software. So it was a no brainer.

I’m sorry that you are too poor to afford tires for your truck, a membership at a club in your hometown, or a female that can deal with someone that’s 5’6.
If you thinking I’m a member at Beau Chene helps you out just a little bit, that’s fine. I know people that try and flex a 5 have it rough.

Are they worth the money and effort? Son is now a golf freak....
TIA for the knowledge....
As long as he's still going out to the course regular, he can for sure improve his game with a simulator. I wouldn't worry about him starting to hit balls fat on the course like a previous poster said. Chunky miss hits aren't nearly as bad on a mat so that can be misleading but it's not really going to make him start hitting more shots fats.
PGA Tour pros use a simulator all the time, if it's good enough for them and they can benefit from them, I think it's probably good enough for your kid. And you can get a good setup for about 5k these days and can find some used on FB Marketplace. I see them pop up all the time.
I'm almost 40 now and hitting off mats is hard on my wrist and shoulders or else I'd have a nice set up, but I usually only hit driver on a simulator now to avoid the impact so it's not worth it for me personally.

This. I bought a Garmin R10 for about $500. I bought a cheap hitting mat on amazon and a net. Set it up in the shop and play a few rounds with the fam on the weekends.
They aren't perfect and every once in a while give a bad read. It's accurate enough for for what use it for.
