That overpaid 49ers defense is why they lost. The offense in the 4th quarter and OT did everything they could. The muff punt hurt because the Chiefs hadn't done that much up to that point. But they overcame it. The missed PAT hurt because all else stays the same you win. But in the end the defense had to make stops and they didn't. Defense wins championship.
