Yeah I agree about him going to ND instead of USC. In hindsight I think it shows how he’s influenced by others easily. Kinda explains how he believed the whole catfishing thing. I can only imagine his response when he asked for a very specific picture to prove she was alive and actually got it!!
For the Neg peeps here, did y’all watch it or just going off of memory? The documentary may change your mind if you haven’t watched it.

The catfisher was a Grade-A piece of shite Over here talking about how it made her feel, and how trapped she felt, but they're emotionally manipulating another guy just because their daddy made them play football against their will. The move to become trans screams, "frick, gotta use this get out of jail free card while I can"
Honestly doc was a pretty big argument that trans is a mental health issue more then anything

The deadspin guy was hilarious. Made the whole documentary

I think many here are underestimating how sheltered and naïve he was growing up strongly tied to the Mormon faith and a tight knit family with heavy focus on discipline. He certainly wasn’t as prepared to suspect and deal with a catfishing scheme like that as many on this board would be.

2009-2012, while catfishing wasn’t nearly as prevalent.
I’d say it’s less prevalent now because it’s been exposed by how much it happened back then. Plus everything uses a verification system now.

I remember him/her/them/etc on some talk show right after it happened and you could tell he/she/they was wack

Watched most of it. Manti Teo is a Homosexual. That Tuiososopo character is a mentally ill homosexual.

Watch the Katie Couric interview clip when she asks Teo if he is a homosexual. Look this body language and him squirm in that chair. Teo is a homosexual. I have no doubt.

Means absolutely nothing. So were Rock Hudson, Elton John, Robert Reed and a host of other cocksucking homosexuals.

This thing REALLY stood out to me. This dude really wanted to go to SC. But he was so naive and so easily influenced that he chose Notre Dame of all places. And he was absolutely miserable. I’ve always thought that Manti was never really playing with a full deck. A guy that was book smart to pass classes but so incredibly sheltered and also ingrained in football and religion that he didn’t really know how to interact or talk to people that weren’t around the game, especially women. He seems incredibly awkward and uncomfortable in his own skin during those college interviews. Someone like that, so innocent of common practices like cat fishing then, was 100% going to fall for someone like Lennay even if it wasn’t that particular guy doing it.
A really complete 180 to how he appears now as an adult.

I feel bad for the guy BUT he wasn’t completely innocent. He definitely played it up. I remember that season pretty clearly. He spoke about his grandma and dead girlfriend ALOT and it was brought up almost every time he was on screen that season. He enjoyed that shite and benefited from the attention. I hate it fricked him up so badly but it seemed like he was more hurt by the backlash than hurt by the actual person that did this to him and all the elaborate lies that were concocted to keep it up. And it was pretty apparent in the documentary. It never really focused as much on him being mad at “Lennay” and focused way more on the backlash he got. Which I get. But this person had a HUGE helping hand in fricking this dude up for life both financially and emotionally.
And his therapy was more to do with dealing with the hecklers and the memes and not the actual catfishing that happened to him. This to me says he always felt guilty about how much he played into their “relationship”

This is 2022, he would be a fricking rockstar to certain people if he came out as gay. There is no need for him to fake being straight.

Just finished watching. I fully believe he had no idea what was going on at the time.
As the Deadspin guys mentioned, how did every major news outlet including ESPN have no idea either?
