He took several steps into the stands in order to get into the fan's face, exchange words with him, then assault him. I don't care where you think he was positioned in that arena, the basketball player made the effort to walk up to the fan, not the other way around. The fan never left his seat.

No amount of words or insults justify going up to a fan in their seat and assaulting them. I don't care how sensitive you are. We used to have M&Ms constantly thrown at us, and we managed not to act like a baby vagina.

I think a suspension for Smart is a given. What the fan said, if that can be determined, will help determine the length of the suspension. If the fan did go way over the line with what he said, I'd hope the school takes action and bans the fan. If the fan only said something mild, then no big deal.

If it were merely yelling at players you would have a point.

But it isn't.

He didn't go into the stands to attack the a-hole.

He was there as a result of the play.

The a-hole insulted him. Smart, rightfully, pushed him.

I could not possibly disagree more.

The only reason NOT to do it for Smart is due to the punishment coming. But there are about a million things the fan could have done or said to easily justify what Smart did.

Personal insults. Family. Race. Religion.

Basically anything that will get your arse kicked.

I sincerely hope that you're not this dense, but that hope is fading with every post.

I just saw the video for the first time. You can tell by the wifes reaction that the douche fan is used to running his mouth with no repurcussions. I don't care what he said, but his smug look and ugly wife made him deserve at least a shove.

How has the fan suffered due to this "assault" he endured?

Smart has to be suspended for a few games.

As for 50 year old men heckling players...what a douche. You do that in your 20s.

Recap of Stephen A.'s comments:

Texas Tech will deal with fan if he used racial slurs. But that does not excuse Smart's actions. He needs control. Should be suspended and suggested 5 games.

Holy shite. I agree with Stephen A. Smith for the first time ever.

And a hard one at that.

And if he's Tech's #1 fan, what in the hell is he doing three rows under the basket?

That's being intellectually dishonest. He turned and headed towards the fan because he was mad. Call that whatever you want, but when you make the choice to go after a fan, severe punishment needs to follow.

he was in the stands, but wasn't next to the guy. he turned around and walked further into the stands to confront the fan.
