You should have seen how bitter they were on Twitter when Arenado didn't opt out. Good stuff.

He caught 72 games. And was DH for 39.

The melt has been great. We even have Chub fans in here straight up lying.
Pretty crazy we're going from the worst hitting catcher last year to the 2nd best.

But I recommend printing 'em up anyway.

And he looks damn good in the best uniform in the league too! Wins all the way around for the Cards today!

As someone else said, the automated strike zone is coming soon. And Herrera can be brought in as a defensive sub if need be.

You got me - i was given bad info in that regard and did not confirm, but it sure seemed like more watching....whatever.
But my point is still yes his WAR is good as a catcher because he's one of the best hitting catchers around - thing is - that's kinda like being the smartest guy on the short bus, most catchers can't hit.
His offensive WAR as a DH is 0.2 which gives you an idea of what he is as a hitter when you remove the relative position parameters and that is slightly above average.
And factor in the regression as a defensive catcher last year which was startling, and you might start to wonder about that contract.
Now he was never a great pitch framer and the better pitchers like Lester and Hendricks often preferred Rossi and last year Gomes to Javi, and blocking balls he was always average at best, but dude could always throw. Until last year - he was just awful throwing it was astonishing.

Yeah for sure, makes choosing a top end hitting catcher over a defensive one a no brainer these days. Especially when you are already the best fielding team in MLB. Just a perfect fit in many ways.

Yea, that was my bad. It did seem like he was DH for the majority of the year. With that said, 72 games does not seem like a lot when you are the primary guy.

He will probably never be elite behind the dish, but I can live with this.

Defensively, Contreras has gained plenty of praise for his arm strength, ability to limit the running game and blocking skills. And while he earned the trust of veterans like Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks, Contreras' game calling has been a point of criticism.
In terms of pitch framing, Contreras overcame some major issues early in his career and put in work to become a Gold Glove finalist in 2020. His framing numbers have regressed since that abbreviated standout season (minus one Framing Runs in '21-22, per Statcast), but not to his 2017-19 levels (minus 19 Framing Runs).

No worries I thought I had heard it elsewhere. I do think the Card fans that are dismissing the defensive part of catching and all that entails will come to see what we saw.
Or maybe WC40 re-commits to the craft. He'll never be a guy the pitchers trust the most but he definitely had the physical ability to do all of the other things, he just has to commit to it again.

Ultimately, the Cubs want another Yan Gomes to pair with Yan Gomes. They had the offensive catcher – one of the best in baseball – but they have long been interested in going full-on run-prevention. It’s a philosophical shift years in the making, and the Cubs are betting it will more than offset the loss of the offense.
