Cohen just blew up ownership collusion which is so good for the game. We no longer are going to have to deal with FA stretching into late February/early March

Wilpon wasn’t good for the Mets, but I can’t think of any reason he wasn’t good for the game of baseball in general.

Mets payroll was generally in the top 3rd of the league under Wilpon so it’s not like they were an outlier.

People have always complained about the Yankees spending too much and As not spending enough, so that is nothing new. It’s just that the Mets are new to the conversation and nobody talked about them before because they were in the top 3rd.

People want competitive baseball. Part of the allure is that any team has a chance. One team spending 10x what another team spends is not good for that. Neither is the multi year tear downs and rebuilds.

I don’t fault Cohen for spending like he is but I don’t think it’s good for anybody other than Mets fans and the players.

Right. I'm sure the owners are much wealthier than they let on. But not every owner can spend a half billion a year. And then we have the teams who are owned by corporations (I miss Ted Turner). Much more nuance to this than these payrolls being good for baseball.

eh

No one is saying every team can spend that much. But some can, and they all absolutely can spend more than what they are

Everything is subjective. There is no more objectiveness. It's the way of the world now, I get it.

If your favorite team is a traditional, media favored one, I'm sure things will work out for you.

I can see where the old man gets to the point of telling everyone to get the frick off his lawn.

I caught Russo on High Heat yesterday, and he shared the exact concerns and sentiment that I have, and that's coming from a lifelong NY fan. The team concept of development is pretty much becoming antiquated.

It won't mean much to most casual fans. I'm gonna try and enjoy it while I can, before the players are calling the shots like the NBA, and showing up for the playoffs only. It's already headed in that direction.

One or two players can’t change the entire trajectory of a baseball team like they can in basketball/the NBA. It will never be like that

Pujols and Josh Hamilton disagree.

My problem is not paying high saleries per se although sometimes that is way too out of whack on some individual cases - it's the length of the contracts and I've heard all the arguments for and remain unconvinced by any of them that these huge 10-13 year contracts are good and IMHO there have been VERY few contracts of that length that in the end worked out great for the team and baseball.

Yes, it’s why I still follow MLB and quit following NBA years ago.

For the small market teams in MLB such as Houston, Kansas City, and Minnesota to compete, there had to be a strategy involved, along with some guidelines in place to keep the league competitive

I’m not going to follow NY dominated leagues, anymore than I would follow an Elon Musk owned Houston team winning every year

I am interested in seeing the Mets and Yankees lose with their league wide spending excesses, but when they inevitably win out, I guess I’ll move into assisted living bingos and wheelchair square dancing.

Is this a joke? Just because owners don’t spend any money doesn’t make your team “small market”

Teams that can draft and develop large amounts of talent will always be good. That’s simply not changing. A team deciding they want to buy 5 or 6 free agents certainly isn’t. Depth is crucial and young depth can’t really be purchased in the current system

Debating markets not on my list of activities today. I'll only say that historically markets are not based solely on population

My best baseball memories are related to long time suffering fans finally winning championships, not because their owner paid for it, but through team chemistry in the front office and on the field. Houston is obvious, but I was able to enjoy the Red Sox and Cubs too.

I wanted to see the Indians get one, but might not make it that long, and it will be the Guardians anyway.

Astros are middle of the pack in terms of market size.

Behind the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, White Sox, Giants, A's, Phillies, Rangers, Braves, and Blue Jays.

Of course several large market teams act the opposite, and vice versa.

Spending is what matters as opposed to market. The Astros have been in that 2nd group of teams for the last handful of years. Solidly above average

Outfielder Wil Myers and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a one-year, $7.5 million contract, a source tells ESPN. The deal jumps to $9.5 million based on playing time or if he's traded. There's a mutual option for the 2024 season.

Question for the thread: do you see the Rangers making the playoffs in 2023 and how far can they realistically go, if so?
