At first gotta say- as a Cub fan I was pissed.
But the more I dug into it I was less pissed but still not completely down with it.
Basically you are trading two players of the same age, one a high ceiling but low floor guy in Morel for a player that is more proven at the major league level and can at least not embarrass himself at third defensively. T And he's under control till 2027. Second is not an option right now for the Cubs and Morel wasn't hitting enough to come close to pushing the issue there with his bat this year, and the reason I say that is the only position Morel has shown he can play at a mediocre level is second.
Paredes hit 31 homers last year with 98 RBI and has 16 homers so far this year, but his underlying numbers, at least by Sabergeek standards say he's out over his ski's while Morel's underlying numbers say the opposite, at least earlier this year, not so much of late.
Having lived through this with other Cubs I'm a bit done with waiting on underlying numbers to come around. I'm more about production and Paredes has produced more significantly at the major league level, so I'm good there, plus I've heard there are some internal/locker room issues with Morel that may be at play here as well.
This isn't a win now move it's a down the line move they think Paredes is a more reliable option for the future than Morel.
The wild card is Bigee who may turn into a bullpen phenom if Tampa's track record holds true. But relievers are very volatile year to year so we'll see.

He has a hard time throwing strikes. If hitters don’t chase, he struggles.

Apparently Cubs are in on Blake Snell? The 1 game out of last place Cubs. What the hell are they doing?

Pretty surprised there was zero action tonight’s. Selling teams must be holding firm and buying teams are waiting for them to blink
Which should make for a wild next ~40 hours

Kinda depends on what you’re selling and what you’re buying.
They’re 5 out of a wildcard slot, yet the pitching has been stellar for a while and the offense has been pure shite.
Injuries have hit harder than usual, but most of the guys should make it back.
I agree with hoyer, if you can add for this year and the future, go for it.

I agree, but Bigee is pretty darn young and the stuff is electric. And Tampa has a rep for pitcher development as good as any team in the majors.
But again I go back to relief pitchers can be so volatile, it may not come back to bite the Cubs.

Yeah, I think folks are understandably translating this as a win now move.......it's not. This is not a rental, this guy is under team control until 2027 and the same age as Morel who was also under control for about the same length of time. The move was to put a more proven major league hitter who plays better defense at third and improve that position.
quote:Yeah, Hoyer should take some blame for that so far as roster construction with position players, but ultimately you have had several players underachieve significantly from reasonable expectations offensively. It's been painful to watch.

Just don't get it from Rays perspective. I know it's always about $$$ with them, but damn Paredes is solid as hell and only 25 years old & not priced through the roof (yet). As usual Rays are farm club to whoever needs pieces. Read Morel is "trouble", great.

Yep, most are coming at this from a Cub perspective and I think missing the target in analyzing it, but from the Rays, yes it's always $$ first for them, but they also think they are the best at developing players and they are getting two young but high ceiling guys they think their system can unlock the talent from.

Rangers trade Michael Lorenzen to the Royals

Weird. KC needs back end of the bullpen help, not starters
