Pete Caroll. Think about. He has the most talented team in the nation, according to the recruiting rankings. He plays in a horrendous conference that doesn't feature any other squads with comparable talent. He has the benefit of starting near the top of the polls each and every season.

And yet, despite these advantages, since 2004, he has lost a game or two to far inferior teams each season.

Hmm. Let's see. Took over a mediocre, at best, team in 2001 and in lone year turned them around completely Since that year to present he has won over 70 games a lost 8. He has had finihses of 4, 1 or 2, 1, 2, 4, 2 or 3. Two NC's. Gone to six straight BCS bowls (5-1). Has the highest winning percentage of any coach. With your criteria, I guess the only way to not be over-rated would have been for him to go 80-0 with six NC.

Psst, and Miles lost to far inferior teams last year as well.

Psst again, the shite conference you talk about keeps beating up on the SEC, so what does that say?

I agree that right now Stopps does not make that list. But if start listing what is expected of those recruits, at OU, making in the 3's, at some point he is going to seen as an underachiever.

Forbes Best & Worst Coaches For the Money

They've got the worst list as:

1. Ferentz - Iowa
2. Greg Robinson - Syracuse
3. Weis - Notre Dame
4. Ralph Friedgen - Maryland
5. Al Groh - Virginia

are you telling me you would not love to have a coach that is good for 10 or 11 wins a season?

tressel is a class guy. there is not a fan base out there that would not like tressel as their coach.

That's like LSU football losing to Vanderbilt or Miss. St. or even worse losing to Tulane.

Or, losing to Kentucky and Arkansas (at home) in the same season. That could never happen, now could it.

I agree that Carroll does not belong on that list. He has said many times that his goal is to get to the Rose Bowl at the end of the year. He has been very successful by that measure.

PC took recruiting to another level and gets the best out of his assistant coaches.

If you measure success by NCs, his total of 1 and 2/3rds national championships doesn't seem to match the talent he's had on the payroll.

Honestly, if Miles left LSU, who in BR would mind seeing PC's name on the short list of interested coaches?

Although he whined his way to a consolation partial NC in 2003, you gotta give him his due.

It's been a slow day so bear with me...I'd like to see this put to a test over the past five years:

1.Take the pre-season rankings vs. the final rankings.

2.Take the coaches salary vs. the number of wins.

3.Take the recruiting rankings vs. the final rankings.

I realize that 7 wins in the SEC is different than 7 wins in the MAC, etc. but that could even out with the rankings. Rank the teams in order of those three stats to see which team (or coach for those years) has been the biggest underachiever.

I know its a lot of work, but we could give this to the intern. Am I nuts here?

Forbes kind of did this to get a numerical measure on "good coaches vs bad coaches" for the money. See my link in post above.

ACtually not really true. They were #1 going into the bowls and beat the #4 team convincingly. When #1 wins bowl they have always stayed #1, unless there is a pre-signed agreement with the poolsters (i.e., coahces poll and BCS).

Alright dumbass, considering Kentucky was a pretty decent team last season and obviously you don't remember who all was on Arkansas' team last season. You pathetic, whiney, stuck up pre-madonna's lost to UCLA and Oregon State 2 years ago and do I need to mention the loss, to Stanford, at home... Last year's UK or Ark team would have beaten Stanford by atleast 3 td's... bitch

Pete Caroll hands down. He does a great job of rounding the troops (recruits). But he would not have near the success if he were coaching anywhere else.

Not sure how considering there is not one active coach with more NC's or a higher winning percentage.

Kentucky sucked moose crank last year and was extremely overrated. They beat a pedestrian FSU team in their bowl game only because half of Leon County, FL was suspended for the game. And even then it was VERY close.

Arkansas had many of the same players from the team USC waxed like a bikini line in Fayetteville the year before. We dropped half a hundred on that "SEC Defense". In their own crib.

Pete coaches defense right. His defenses are consistently overrated. He's managed to get Cali. kids to believe an already established USC.

Ill consider a coach that has done more with less and exceeded expectations when they get more. Only one coach qualifies... Nicky.
