Isnt a basic nature of Amateur sports the idea of the "little guy" at least, as little as it may be, having a shot? This now makes that 100% impossible.
The little guys all have shots individually to make the roster or coaching staff of a P5 team. Just like you can try out for the NFL. Doesn't mean everyone will make it. If I get 50 guys from the neighborhood to make a football team and the petition the NFL to play, am I supposed to stomp my feet and get mad when they tell me to get lost?

This is going to destroy college hockey, which is basically all small conferences except for one that just formed last year - the Big 10. If they start getting to pay their players and recruit without rules, guess which conference is going to win the championship every year?
Why do you guys keep bringing up other sports like it has anything to do with football? The P5s will stay in the NCAA in all other sports the way it is. This is football only. Those programs would lose money going P5 in everything. You think they don't realize how much money march madness makes?

if you turn the mid and bottom tier P5 schools into a permanent lower class (which I'm sorry, will absolutely happen) their fan bases will dry up.
I'm afraid that's how capitalism works. Schools like Mississippi State and Vanderbilt have been propped up by the rest of the conference for years on end. If they die out in this new era then it will be no different than the dinosaurs going extinct. It's all part of natural selection.

The biggest question I derive from this is who is going to enforce the rules that the "Power 5" implements ?
A law is enforeced at the end if the nightstick and if its not the Ncaa's nightstick then who's is it ?

I would assume they would have their own body. As long as the NCAA let's them do what they want, it bodes well for them because they keep the status quo on all the other sports which actually needs those small schools to function well. Also, with fewer rules, much less oversight is needed. If you can offer kids money to come to your school, you no longer need to investigate it.

May as well drop the academic charade. In fact, may as well just send NCAA football back to club level sports and form a legit minor league.

I don't think the college presidents would let this happen. They might go along with paying the athletes, but I don't think they would go so far as to lose the fact that these are still students. Besides, the NFL wouldn't want that to happen either. They don't want these kids sticking around college, they want them leaving when they are 20-21 and entering the draft.

College athletics are not supposed to be a capitalistic playground to eat or be eaten in.
Get outta here with that noise.
Remember the whole non profit part?
Never mind that its short sighted as all get out. If you kill off all the mid tier and lower end teams all you are doing is creating an eventual decline in your sport b/c you 'll have less people who will be willing to be invested in it.

You are being over-dramatic. As another poster mentioned, this doesn't kill off anyone. If the teams at the mid tier schools can only afford to live by playing as the cupcakes for the big dogs a few times a year, maybe the program does need to reevaluate. Perhaps non-P5 schools should drop to 35 scholarships instead of 85. There is no law of thermodynamics that says college teams can only ever have 85 scholarship athletes or must have a stadium that can fit 60k. NAIA has only 24 scholarships per team I believe. If there needs to be changes, perhaps the smaller schools need to understand they need to live at their means, not above them.

Also wanted to add that football popularity is at al all-time high right now and is in no danger of decline. Even if there was no college football outside of the P5 the CFB and NFL scene would be dandy.

I love college football, and theses changes are worrisome.
Fits right in with today's whatever it takes to get ahead thinking
I'm to the point.....
Either we get back to true student athletes and let the best high school players move on to the NFL right away. Or we compensate CFB players to somewhat offset what they could be making in the NFL. Even with lesser talent, at the college level across-the-board, CFB would still mean a bunch to many. Our love for the programs or the teams will always push that love. No matter who's wearing your favorite uniform. Having less talented players who are actual student athletes doesn't sound that bad either.

The demand may still be there now, but when LSU has to pony up to pay all the scholarship athletes' their stipend, that money will come from the fan. When LSU has to pay the salaries of all the additional coaches, that money will come from the fan. When LSU has to fund full, 4 yr scholarships for all its athletes, that money will come from the fans. etc etc. Fans are already bitching about the cost of attending college sports: add all these additional costs to their burden & said demand may well drop dramatically.
